O f cou rse, we want to keep Camel involved. Instead of sitting back and throwing rocks at a decision so meone makes, try to work with them after th e decision is made and make th a t wo rk for everybody's benefit. Instead of sitting back and staying, "That was a stupid idea." The decision's made. If it 's not going to wo rk o ut , th ey'll cha nge it, You mak e the best of it. It 's a ll teamwork. The Lo s An gel es La kers weren't th e best team in basketball for two vears because of a lack o f teamwork: We need to look at d irt track raci ng as a who le. R.]. Reyno lds , the AMA, the pro mo ters, th e rid ers, mech anics and the spectators , have to wo rk together as a big team. To make the overa ll pictu re of the sport some thing that's a joy to see. Right now th e raci ng is grea t. But the overa ll pi cture is not so great. We need to quit loo ki ng two feet in fro nt of o ur faces as to wh at 's best for each ind ivid ua l and look a little further o n down th e lin e as to what's best for everyo ne. Is there any one race, or race track, that sticks in your mind? Every tim e I walk over th e hill at Peoria and start wa lking down into that little ca nyo n, I get chills up and down my spi ne. It 's one ra ce track that's m y favorite. It 's not just the track itself. It 's how th e whole event is run. It's a cl ub run event , similar to what I've been involved with at th e Lodi Motorcycle Club over th e years. They're real hospitable. It 's an event that's always run pretty good, yo u don't hav e many delays. It's a great natural amphitheater for racing. I think it would be a great show for ABC Wid e World of Sp?rts. ' Everything's nght there. When yo u're co mi ng off the corn ers, th e crowd is on to p of yo u. It's so compact and fast-paced. It's a rea l exci ti ng show . And I've had a lo t of success th ere. I won my first Nationa l th ere in '86. Do you hav e an y long-term goals? I'd li ke to help paint .an overall better picture for motorcycle rac ing in general, no t just d irt track raci ng. I'd lik e to help the overall image of motorcycle racing as best as I can. I'd also lik e to help expand dirt tra ck raci ng o n th e grass roots level for yo u th an amateurs. m ~mg to become mo re involved in helping younger riders, locally her e at first, by helping them with sponsorsh ip, guidance, advi ce and ontrack hel p . I wa n to help keep the crop of young d irt trackers coming through. I feel like l owe that to dirt tra ck. I t's been real good to me. It 's a good sport. I'm making a livin g at it. I You've been racing since you were six years old, Is it still fu n? Ri ght now I'm just cho m ping at the bit to get o n th e a irp lane and go to Florida. I can 't wait to be a ble to put th e helmet and steel shoe o n and go zooming around agai n. I' m really keyed up o n racing in Daytona. It 's not com ing soo n eno ugh. Do you ever think of the dangers involved with raci ng? If it can ha ppen to someone as talented as Ted Boody , it can happen to anybody? You always have th at th ought in th e back of your mind. We look at raci ng as an accepted risk. We acce pt the fact that we're risking our lives do in g so me thin g that we thoroughly enj o y. We know th ere's a possibility that any race co uld be our last . We hav e a kind of co n tro lled fear . . I'v e thought a bo ut that a lot this last season. You see a grea t individual like Ted Boody die and you th ink, " Man, that could hav e been me," And you really feel for his family, Terry, she 's a great lady , and she 's got two wonderful daughters in Tara and Li ndsay. You hate to see something like that happen. You on ly hope it doesn't ha ppe n to yourself. But th at 's something we accept. H ave you ever considered goi ng into road racing? Yeah , it interests me a lot. The type of racing that they do in Europe is extemely competitive, I'm an extremely competitive guy, It doesn't matter if I'm racing motorcycles, playin g basketball with my cit y league team, or playin g a card game - I want to win . In a way it 's bad. Som etimes wh en you pl ay against some body wh o 's not so co mpe titive, it 's not fun for them . But I have such a competi tive nature, a nd I look at how com petitive things ar e on the Grand Prix circu it, week in and week o ut. it exci tes me. I lik e that type of . a tm os p he re. Of co urse, th e money's pr etty good over there for the top guys.• Carr is pleased that an AMA Grand National short track has been added to the li st of events that will make up Daytona Cycle Week '89 . ien._u AU t' ~~~w~A sMot:~stc;cle uper ore Non......SUzuld Bucks ContIn••ncy Proa:r_m $ . ~~S~~~i~h~ S up e rsp ort No vic e , He av yw e ight Su pe r, port Novice Ca ll For Mor.
