Lawson (3 ) leads Roche (21 I, Ch ili, Gardner (1 I, Sarron (71, Magee (1 61 and the rest of the 500cc class - 1989 could end up being the best ever. By Alan Cathcart For once the superlatives are justified; this . has - been the most suspenseful , most surprising -off season for Grand P rix road racing since the modern era began four decades ago . Moreover.-it now leaves us poised in even greater . suspense to awai t the start of a rac ing year tha t seems likely to provide more superlatives still _ perha ps the most exci ting GP season ever is abo ut to begi n. Thoug h the exci tement is far from confined 10 the 500cc class thai's where it's most concentrated, heigh tened by the amazi ng sequence of events involvi ng reign ing World Cha mpio n Eddie Lawson and his bitter riva l of the pas t half decade, two-ti me 500cc titl e holder Fredd ie Spencer. You could have wri tten a Holl ywood script based on the events of the pas t six mo n ths and had a har d time convinci ng the average enthusias t of its probability; yet truth has proved stranger than fiction - even if we're unl ikely to ever reall y know the real facts beh in d. the startling move wh ich sparked this who le seq uence of chess moves, Stead y Eddi e's defection to H onda. In a way, it was the fact tha t a ll th is eru p ted once the '89 rosters had seemed to be set, that star tled the GP world the most. Once Kevin Sch wantz turn ed down G iacomo Ago st ini 's offer to ri de a Marl boro Yaf!laha th is year (a nd a H~>nda dea~?) 10 f~vor of another year With S~U kl , the silly se:'son seemed to have f!uled ou t before 1\ began. Sure, we'd a ll hea rd these rumors about Law~ n and Honda , but they seemed ~tal.n t be the product of ~e ferule imagmauon of the hard-gossip-starved Ital ian press in wh ich they first surfaced. Bu t the rumors tu rn ed out to be true, Eddie dropped his thunderbolt an d left Ago without a number one rid er - or so we all tho ugh t. Persuad ing frag ile Freddie back to the G P are na was not only a superb riposte in PR terms, thus making lemonade out of the lemon he'd been handed by Law son , it also provided Ago and his Marlboro backers with their only real optio n to be in conte nti on for the '89 Wor ld Ch ampionship. So now that all the pieces have fall en into p lace, we'r e left wit h a fascinatin g lin eup that seems certain to pr esage an ul tra -com peti tive season of races. For sure, whoever ends up bei ng crowned 500cc Wor ld Ch ampion in 1989 will have earned the titl e in a way few of h is predecessors have had to. With four major marques and up to 20 riders moun ted o n fa ct ory fou r-cy lin de r mach ines alJ strivi ng for success, 1989 is set to offer a series of battles royal that will provid e not only thrilling ente rtain ment for trackside spec tators, but perhaps mor e important ly j uicy viewing for the worldwide mill ions that bik e raci ng's new TV supremo Bernie Eccleston e will be hoping to attract 10 our sport. The coming season could hardly be expected to provide a better showcase for G P roa d raci ng as it vies for co nten tion as a wor ld sport in p rime time TV terms. Success here will not only mean increased ex po sure for exis tin g sponsors, but attract new ones, per ha ps even reducing our depe nde nce on the T ob acco Vot e. In more ways tha n one, 1989 is sha p ing up , to be a cru cial year in GP 'h istory. Figuring ou t wh o's goi ng 10 do what is even harder tha n usual -with all the musical cha irs thai's been goi ng on, bu t one man who' ll be riding for the same team as last year is '87 World Champion Wayne Gardner. This is bound to give h im a big ad vantage in terms of the overall season for the simple reaso n that he wo n't hav e to worry abou t settling in to a new team , striking up a relationsh ip with people a t a new factory, and establishing a close working relationsltip with a new tuner. The gritty Aussie look the loss of his titl e last season very hard , and is pr ecisely the sort of never-say-die character who can be expected to redouble his efforts to regai n it in '89. EspecialJy if at the sam e time it mea ns p utting on e over on hi s far -fro m-friendl y new Hon da teammate Eddie Law son in order to show wh o's top do g at the Big H Ranch. Con tain ing the open dislike that Wayn e and Eddie ha ve for each othe r will be at least as diffi cult a task for those in charge of the Rothmans Honda team as putting it over their Yama ha a nd Suzuki (and Cagiva) rivals. It sho uld be standi ng roo m only for those pos t-q ua lifying get togethers in the Rothmans Press Cen ter when the two of them say their bit seated aro un d the same table. Equall y, La wson will be OUI to prove tha t he's the better of Gardn er on eq ua l mach in ery, though a key facto r here of course wi ll be the natu re of said machine. The 1989 NSR500 Honda looks set to be even more of a departure fro m its predecessor in term s of design than in previous years. And the questio n must
