That the road called out to m e and I had to answer it once m ore regardless. R iding, riding again, the weather dry for a day, no longer. I stayed away from the coast this time and cut through vall eys, w ent up , along Cal ifornia's : rugged spine, rid ing solo, pack ing a rainsu it ju st in case. Wh en I had asked if Sh e wanted to go along, her answ er was a Yes tem pered to me an No. Sh e was sorry, honest she was. But I sho u ld go, certainly, witho ut reservation . And th e blessings she gave becam e an illusion fo r my ride. A warming wisdom that never melted away, was always there. As compassionate and swee t as a mother's soft w his per in m y childhood's ear. I take that voice now w hen and whereever I go. It's staggering how th rough this motorcycle mileage it always survives, still rem ains with m e. R em em bered in th is wom an, th is vision of m y lover and wi fe, fri end fo rever. A voice th at keeps us from being lost and alone. Even if I am somewhere surronded by crowds, wh ile at th e same tim e rem oved, remote. Distance does not th in her words but only makes th em more audible, closer. As real as this motor's own way of speech . A vocal reso na n ce f low ing through th e m ind, softly singing " Be true, be clean, be safe." T he roadb ike repl ies, doing it 's own jo b, rush ing me forward. And then the rain s come; suddenly cold and p erm eating, even with all th is rain gear on . I coach m y rig ht hand to be a sort of A BS, and after a w hile stop at a dry pla ce and use the pa y phone. Punching that touch ton e crazy tune, getting that fami liar answ er. It is her voice again, aff ectiona te and beckon ing, inuiting irn e back over the traveled road. Back to the beginning. And now th e rain seems to vanish, tho ugh th e go ing is still wet and getting we tter, blurr ing headlig hts in the coming night . I press on and ride th at narrow ribbon slicing the black landscape neatly in half. And the distance is [ractioned until only one mile is left. Th en I see the light , her lig ht . And I am home again, fu lfille d by the adventure, rewarded by the fi nale. And now I know what gift is mine, to have the best of both worlds. The R ide, and Her Love.
