mans was push in g ahead. At th e beginning of lap five Dave Engstrom had moved past Green and was in for the second spot, closing o n Commans. Engstrom stalked for a lap and then made his move on the final circuit, exiting a turn with the better line which resulted in the lead and rnoto win. Commans tooks second followed by Green, Christansen and Todd Damron, who had slowly wo rked his way to fifth. Round two was similar to the first rnoto as Maddux nailed a no ther hol esh ot fo llowed by Engstrom, Dave Fernandez, Cornrnans and Damron. Engstrom once a ga i n hounded th e early leader and got by a t th e beginning of lap three. Once into the lead Engstrom never looked back and took it all th e way to the ch eckers. By lap four Maddux had created eno ugh distance over third to relax, while Com mans and Damron fought for th e position. Damron even tuall y got by to fin ish th ird as Com mans faded and fell back a few positions. Fernandez took control of fourth and Rand y GaVTOn completed the top fiv~ • Results Kenny Maddux (M7). Taven Weinrick (T26) and Glenn Commans (18) got a good start in the 500cc Intermediate class. but Dave Engstrom (3 77) came from behind to win both motos and take the overall v ictory. Bill J amerson (90) and Ken Zahrt swapped w ins in the Vet Pro class w ith Zahrt ta king t he second round f or the overall win . Gary Yearsley (6Y) leads Ken neth Strathman (87 ) and t he rest of the 250cc Beginner Division Two class out of the first turn. 20 Crenshaw took the win over Berry and Smith. The first mo to of the Vet J u nior clas s featu red Doug J ohnson with the holeshot tra iled by Yamaha rider Vin cent Gonza les. Tony Shipma n, J ohn Layne and Tim Ke tch a m. La ynepo unded his way from fifth a nd had gotten to second wh ere he was right o n J ohnson's tail by the end of th e th ird lap. After closely following J ohnson, Layne made h is move exiting a large berm and was able to slip by for th e lead. Seconds later J ohnson went down and gave seco nd to Gonza les, a n d a fter remounting in third Johnson began to in ch his way ba ck up. Ga ry Shoe ma ke r a n d Bi ll Wi lli s had moved into fo urt h a nd fifth a nd were a few bike lengt hs beh ind J o hnson. With two laps to go Lay ne held a co mfortable lead, but Sho emaker wanted more a nd began a charge th at carried hi m all the way to second a t the finish. Gonzal es took th ird whil e Johnson and Willis ro unded ou t th e to p five. Shi pma n tim ed th e ga te perfectly an d nailed th e hol esh ot in moto two, but drifted wid e enough in th e first turn for Lay ne to ta ke advant age a nd move into the lead . Sh ipma n held his ground for th e next couple of turns but a llowed Garrie Turcotte a nd his CZ to slip by for second, ma king the order La yne, Turcot te, Shi p m an , . J ohn Ma zor and Shoema ker. By the fifth lap the top five hadn 't changed a nd it looked lik e th ey'd stay in that order. That was until th e last lap. Coming ou t of th e back sectio n La yne was still in co mma nd but Shi p ma n had worked back into second a nd was foll owed by Johnson . The ra ce ended th at way with Mazor in co n tro l of fourth whi le Ketcham ro unded out th e top five. · Kenn y Maddux nailed th e holesho t as the first 500cc Intermediat e class moto launched off the line. Maddux quickl y put so me time o n Gl enn Co mma ns, wh o was closely follo wed by J oel Christansen, Comman s a nd Christansen closed in on Maddux, wh o bobbled slig h tly and the three riders co ll ided.
