Tuf Racing's Keith Bowen (2 1) and qualifed for .both main' events. Ron Lech ien (4) and Jeff 'Sta nt on (7) were front-runners both days. Lechien finished third on Saturday and ninth on Sunday. postions had settled down with Johnson selling the pace, Cooper in second followed by O'Mara , Tichenor, Dubach , Lechien and Jason Upshaw. The order remained th e same for the next few la ps, and it was Lechien who was the only rider threatening, :lnd his prey was Dubach, then Tichenor. However, Tichenor stayed tough for four laps before Lechien shot into fourth. U p front , Johnson continued to cru ise. . " I fina lly got a good start, wh ich ma de a big differen ce compared to last night. I set my own pace today, and tried not to lose intrest in the race, because this track could jump u p and bite you if you're not paying , a tten tion." After Lechien moved into fourth , he found about 'a five-second gap between himself .a nd O 'Mara, who was sizing up Cooper. By midrace, Cooper was noticably beginning to fade and O 'Mara was ready to pounce. " I was feeling pretty smooth at the start," said Cooper, "but Ijust started gelling tired. My conditioning hasn 'tbeen up to par lately. As the race wore on I faded. " O'Mara saw this and made his move with six laps to go, passing Cooper on the inside of a tum. "I was hoping to get Cooper so I could get second, " said O 'Mara. "I knew I would be happy with second, beca use Johnson is going so fast right now." " O'Mara flat out beat me," said Cooper, With six la p s to go, the to p positions were Joh nson, O 'M ara , Coope r, Lec hien, Ba yle, T ichenor and Dubach . Bu t Lec hien came u p ' short over the tri p le j um p and crashed, letting Ba yle, Tiche nor, Stanton and Dubach by. As the race neared the end, th e only rider on the move was Stanton. After a so-so start, Stanton charged through the pack a nd fou nd fourth pl ace wi th two laps to go. . Stanton was hamm ering on Cooper, and as the two diced, they started catching O 'Mara. Stanton, at one point, passed Cooper for third, but Cooper got him back a turn later, With one lap to go, O 'Mara , Cooper and Stanton were inches apart. After Johnson flew past the checkered flag for his th ird win of the series, O ' Ma ra secured second, while Cooper held back his teammate, S tanton. Fifth went to Tichenor, w ho was followed by Bayle, Dubach, Keh oe, Lechien a nd Fis her. "I started making some mistakes la te in th e race," sai d J oh nson . " I cased it once over the triples - I guess I was worried too much about lapped riders., I just wanted to stay strong and keep breathing." " I' m rea l happy," said O'Mara, " b u t I shou ld 've had two seconds th is weekend. I'm banging on the door. I started to gain on Johnson a little bit there. About three-quarters of the .way through, I put in some rea l good laps, but then I started making mistakes. So I thought of instead of crashing, that I should just tone it down a lillie and settle for second." 125 Main ' The 125cc main' turned into the confrontation that the Washington crowd wanted to see - Matiasevich vs. Ward. Matiasevich took the holeshot but opted not to jump the triples on the first lap. This cost him as Ward flew over all three jumps a nd into the lead. Rick Sirnrnet settled into third about fo ur seconds behi nd Matiasevich and was followed by Mich ael Craig, J erem y McGrath and Jimmy Gaddis. Up fro nt Wa rd was h oldin g hi s own a~i ns t Ma tiasevich , m uch to the delight of th e crowd. T h ree la ps into the race, Simrnet endoed h ard over the tri ples, knocking him o ut of contention. Craig found himself all alone in third with McGrath fourth. .By the halfway point, Matiasevich began to fatigue beca use of the flu, Team Honda's Guy Cooper (10) finished third overall Sunday. while Shaun Kalas (2 i ) finished midpack both nights. and Craig -began pressuring -for seco nd p lace , 'as Ward sai led out in front. Suddenly, lady. luck shined on .Matiasevich, because with three la ps to go, Ward landed short over the triples a nd crashed, as did Craig over . a double jump. "Lapped riders got in my way and I didn't have the drive to clear the jump," said Ward. "I cased it and I think it broke the frame." The next thing Matiasevich knew, he was leading and way out in front, Both Ward and Craig failed to finish the event after crashing, which gave McGrath second and Suzuki rider Lance Smail third. But closing fast was Mike LaRocco who had crashed ea rIyin th e race. With Matiasevich holding on to a huge lead, McGrath, Smail and La Rocco fought tooth ' n' nail over second, Although the battle was . fierce, no passing was made. Mati asevich took the win way ahead of McGrath, Smail a nd La kocco, " I ran o ut of energy out there, " said Matiasevich. " I was tired by the fourt h la p and I was ready to sett le for seco nd. I' m feel in g sic k and I' m just glad this race is over wi th ." McGrath said, "My brakes went away on the last two la ps. I'm so happy to finish and do well. I love it. " " This is the best time of my whole life," said Smail. "The competition was tough and this really boosts my confidence." • Results - -;-- _. ; _. -r .» SATURDAY 250: 1. Rick Johnson (Hon); 2.
