Ward was also not present a t Carlsbad which gave th e Maxima/ Kawasa ki/ O 'Neal USAf Acerb is/Ohlins/Rentha IlCTi Brace/ Sco tt -spo n sored Fi sher a n easier shot a t th e o vera ll win. Fish er took co mp lete adva ntage of Ward 's a bsence and won th e overall with two perfect rides. Ward dro pped to seco nd in th e fin a l poi nt sta nd ings a hea d of Yamaha-mounted; Ste ve Lamson. Bro wn 's victory in the 500cc Pro class was not as clea n as Craig's or Fisher's, but it was just as effective. Brown co nt in ued hi s string of consistent fini shes to claim seco nd in both mot os to Bria n Manley for the runner -up position. The number two slot was solid eno ugh to place Brown firml y into th e cha m pio nsh ip victory circle a hea d of Greg Zitterkopf a nd Derek Brown. In th e I25cc Pro class the titl e went righ t down to the wire. Bill y Wh itl ey led Denny Stephenson, J eff Em ig , Mike Young a nd Yues Dem ari a a round a t the stan , but slowl y fad ed back to seventh within the first few laps. With Whitley o u t of the wa y Em ig managed to shoo t past Stephenson and move into the lead. Up fro nt the battle raged as th e top five co ntin ually too k shots at Em ig 's position. Wh ile m uc h of th e a ttentio n was bein g focu sed o n th e lead, Craig had begun wor king his way up from a poor start and slowly negotiated hi s way into fifth. Nearthe halfw a y po int th e order of the top five flip-flopped aro und as Craig forced hi s way into th ird behind Emig and Step henson . Su zuki's Todd DeHoop bum ped h is way up to fo urth with Young fall in g back to fifth . The last few laps saw Craig put
