they purchased a steed and set out on the drive to th e Roberts ranch. It should be no ted here th at Rainey had tried to do th e same th ing a month earlier a nd whi le on the wa y to the ranch was sidelined when hi s steed launched a rod th rough the block, necessitating a late eveni n g pl ea for assista nce (the tow truck guy was given th e dead junker fo r co mi ng to Wayne's rescu e). Anyway, R.J .'s mount got abou t as far as Wayne's and blew up in a big wa y. Enter Cam el P ro co mp etito r-tu rn ed promoter Scott Pearson who just happened to have a rent-a-wreck. but it too died before it co uld limp onto th e ra nch and it appear ed as though R.J . was withou t a ride. But Roberts had an ticipated such problems and had made a mass purchase of five cars for just such an occasion. The problem wa s that the asse mbled mech anics could barel y ge t two of th e cars ru nning and even Mr. Wo rld Champion La wson was relega ted to th e role of mech anic. It must be men tio ned that Steady Eddie did get a P o ntiac station wagon in to the ac;t that was a runner. Bubba 's rig. a Bui ck, came com ple te with T exas long horn s, Bubba Shobert racing emblems. and a roof painted wi th a statement that said somethi ng abo ut his recent di spute with the AMA. The " short track" race was hel d below the large log cabin house that dominates th e property's skyline . Among th e 50 or so gu ests were Doug Fra nke with his MotoWorld video camera and Franke captured th e start of the race that saw seven of the 10 cars on hand running and on the line., What tra nspired was brief to say the least. Rainey's car grenaded in a smoke bomb on the first lap and La wson 's lu nched itself soo n af terwards. As the smoke cleared from around Lawson's car , Eddie lea ned ou t the window and with a questioning look on hi s face sai d, " The red Iight's on." Lawson exited his once semi-proud race car and jumped in Sparky's car to act as co-pilot. T wo French jou rn alists were bei ng trea ted to the frivoli ty by bei ng scared half to death as passengers. Their " p rize" was to be interviews afterwards. R.j. was, finally able to secure a ' ride after much sh uffling and long face looks from the infield. H e promptly took off on e of th e doors on Bubba 's car and began a lesson in spinning cars th at would have made Dale Earnhardt a smili ng kind of guy. The crowning glory moment came when Shobert launched his dead beat car downhill. directl y at Lawson 's dead beat. and th e resulti ng coll isio n was the final cu rtai n in what had become a stock car demolition or destruction derby. King Kenn y Roberts wa s th e winner, but o nly because he was th e only on e running at the end of the da y. A hillclimb was also part of the hilarity and once again " Ra w Bu tts" was the winner by being th e first o ne over the hill, althou gh most everyo ne event uall y made it to the top. It should be mentioned that Mr. Motocross. Rick J ohnson, ren ewed the ju mp ing co n test he started last year in which Shobert br oke hi s wrist. There were no takers after R.j. ·s first jump was over Bubba 's pickup and was estimated to be over 100 feet in length. What happened after th e stock car happening is classified material . but for a hint on what transp ired note that Ray Abram s of A&A Racing parked the Camel Pro Series bus on th e side of the road to th e house and spent th e weekend. • :..-.--SUZUKICOUN1HlSUZUKI COUNTRY in vites all to SCR's OPEN HOUSE Friday, January 27t h 12:00 noon until?
