Bayle topped the first two 250cc races before laying back during the first few laps in the main, then Larry Ward (971) and Holland banged handlebars throughout the night. Ward. at one time or another. led all three 250cc motos. pouring on the gas and crossing the finish line in first place over Honda's . Jeff Stanton, Larry Ward, Robert Naughton and George Holland. Schmit was the dominate figure throughout the night in the 125cc class. The former Suzuki support rider lOpped all three 125cc motos for a convincing win over Kawasaki rider Bryan Pryor, Brent Wineland, Dan Bonham and Deano Cowan. Two-time AMA Supercross Champion Rick J oh nson was scheduled 10 compete in the Scottsdale Supercross, but a knee injury over the hol ida y season forced J o hnson 10 stay at home and take it easy. Although .. the race attracted an estimated 2000 spectators, a much smaller than expected turnout of riders forced the Arizona Moto-X Racing Association (AMXA) to make changes in the night 'Sracing format, The original plan was to run two qualifiers with the top ri d ers transferring to the main eve n t. Instead, all riders headed to the mai n despite their finishes in the " q uali - . fiers." Only 12 riders showed up. The first moto got underway at 4:00 p.m. with the first of three 12lap l25cc motos. Brent Wineland grabbed the early lead in the first race but was quickly passed by Schmit. P ryor followed in third. Wineland and Pryor ma naged to stay close 10 the lead for the next five hips before Sch mit started pullin g away. On lap six Pryor shot past Wineland for second. From the n on the race pretty much went unchanged with Schmit crossing the line in first followed by Pryor, Wineland and Paul Vandespompele.
