Geyer stomps Glen Helen GSN opener By Ken Faught SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 7-8 Yamaha-mounted Kevin Geyer claimed the overall win in division four of the 250cc J u n ior ' class at the openin g round of the 15th Ann ual Continen tal Motosport Club/ Dodge Truck Golden State Nationals at Glen Helen OHV P ar k . 0 n · LOp 0 f t. at, . More th an 1300 riders com peted in the cold, two-d ay event whi ch even saw sno w during some of th e lat e mo tos o n Sa turday. Two tracks were run each day to ins ure th at th e riders would not have to run sho rte ned second motos, . Geyer's division four 250cc Junior class win came after a tough battle with Robert Drew and Kirk Pu erner. In moto o ne Drew chased Geyer all th e wa y to th e checkers where th ey . finished ahead of Claus Holm. J esse Alexander and Puerner, Round two told a different tale as Drew was plagued by problems a nd could o n ly muster a ninth-place fini sh. Geyer again took thewin with Puerner h?ldtng o n to a .s t.ro ng second. Eri c Cassas. wh o finished 14th in moto one, came in third with Alexander and Robb ie Baker compl eting the top five. Geyer's flawl ess performa ce netted him th e overa ll. Pu ern er 's stro ng second moto finish boosted him to second a nd Alexander' s consistent 4· 4 earn ed h im third. Baker managed to steal fourth as H olm dropped to fifth . Geyer 's only loss of th e day ca me in round two of di vision five of the I25cc Jun ior class. Geyer led th e way acros s th e fin ish lin e in round o ne, but co uld onl y work up to second in moto two after a poor sta rt. Ham ilt on scored th e overa ll via his 2-1 tally with Geyer tak in g second. Jimmy Ch amberlain's 4-3 pocketed him third overa ll ahead of Dam on Kemp and Tony Barranti. Chris R idgway also fared well in two classes. winning division one of the l25cc Junior class and placing th ird in division one of th e 250cc J unior class. . In th e first moto of the 125cc class Ridgway suffered from a seventh place start. but quickly caught th e lead ers and ended up placing third behind Todd Maderis and Dennis Dahlin. J.J. Petchel was fourth with Tiger Garcia coming in fifth. Moto two saw Ridgway gate better and trail Robert Nab er in seco nd. Shortly after the start Ridgway found hi s way into the lead with Naber dropping to the runner-up slo t. As Rid gwa y began to open up his lead , Dahlin ca ugh t Mike Finch in th ird and challe nged for hi s position. A few laps' before the fin ish Dahlin made his move and took over th ird. As th e riders crossed th e finish line, Rid gway nailed th e easy win and the o vera ll. Naber was second with Dahlin . Fin ch and Mad eris clo se behind round ing o ut th e top five. Division one of the 250cc Junior class act io n saw Ridgway crash hard while i n third behind Peter Jones and David Zahrt, Matt H etherington took over R idgway's posi tion with Tim Riggs and Ch ad Doggett close behind. Ridgway was ninth. Jones lat er managed to turn his lead into a win with Ridgwa y working his way up to fifth, bumpin g Doggett to sixth. - Zahrt ro cketed out of th e ga te in round two to lead Jon es . Matt Phipps. Zahrt slowly stretched out his lead as Ridgway Billy Felts (31 B) was second behind Jon Kuebler in division two of the 125cc Junior class. sliced his way through the pack. O n lap two Ridgwa y worked his way to third and was closing o n J ones. At the halfway point Ridgway managed to reel in Jones and made a smooth pass for second. After sliding into the runner-up position Ridgway set his sights on Zahrt, but it was too late. Zahrt took th e moto win with Ridgway firiishing a distant seco nd. Jones rounded out th e top three with Phipps ending up fourth and Matson fifth. In th e 500cc Interm ediate class Ron Gilbert used a 2· 1 score to claim th e overall win. Kenny Maddux holeshot th e first mo to, but quickly lost the lead as he sta lled in a set of wh oops, leaving him fifth. As Maddux stru ggled to pi ck up his lost posit ion s, Gi lbert led Dave Fernandez. Mark Nelson and Phil ip T ab oad a aro u nd the track. On lap two Maddux moved to third behind Gi lbert and Fernandez, then soon advanced another position as he cut short Fernandez's stay in second. . Whi le Maddux tried to track down Gi lbert, John Manteufel had begun working his way up from a ninth. On lap three Manteufel jumped into fifth and continually picked up positions. The last few laps saw Maddux put on a tremendous char ge and pass Gilbert for the win. Gilbert took second ahead of John Manteufel. Nelson and Fernandez. Moto two saw Maddux holeshot for the second time and again lose his lead. On lap three Maddux fell back to sixth surrendering his position to Gilbert . Dave Engstrom was in the number two slot over Nelson. Kevin Gr een and Joel Christensen. On th e final lap Nelson dropped to sixth with Maddux negotiating his wa y aro u nd Ch ristensen for fourth. Gilbert held on to the lead for the easy win followed by Engstrom, Green and Maddux. Eri c Shofstall managed to move into fifth just before the fini sh. • Results PIW: 1. Je rry Al eman (VarnI; 3.
