Tommy Clowers (7 8) led J oel A lbrecht (7 2 A) and overall w inner Buddy Antunez (1 B) ear ly in t he fi rst 80cc Expert m ot o . Round two saw Schmit co me back to holeshot Voh land, Ward, Fisher and Steve Lamson. On the first lap Schmit and Vohland ta ngled , allowing Ward to shoot into second -behind Schmit. Vohland dropped to third. Ward chased Schmit for a little . over a lap before the Kawasaki/ . AXO /Si nisalo /Sh oe i!Be l - Ra y/ Du n lo p / Mc P h ea rso n Chevrolet/ Troy Lee-sponsored Wa rd sh oved Schmit to second. . O nce into the lead Wa rd put a few bike lengths between himself and second-place Schmit before Vohland mad e his move and too k over th e runner- u p positio n. After working his way into se cond, Vohland charged after Ward and managed to close the gap on lap three. . On lap four things changed once again as Ward came around with a three-second lead. It appeared that riding two classes was beginning'to ta ke its toll on Vohland as h e continued to lose a second every lap to Ward. As Ward continually pulled . away, Schmit started to ca tch Voh land. With onl y two laps remaining Schmit reeled i n the Kawasa ki! Yoko /Ra ce Tech /Bi effe/FMF/ Scou-sponosred rider and made a pass shortly befor e the fin ish . At the checkers Ward scored th e win with eig h t seconds to spare ahead of Schmit, Vohland, Fisher and Smith. . . "T he first moto I had to fight to hang on," said Ward. " This track is too fast and doesn't have enough technical . stuff. After . putting th e different forks on, th e bike worked a lo t better." "I was second behind Do nny Schmit at the start," said Vohland, " and we started battling from the first lap. It was a rea l intens e figh t and we co llidedreally hard and that ga ve War d the drive and he shot right by me. Later he got into the lead and with th e sun and the dust, he was riding rea lly strong a nd he started to put time on us . I worked my way by Donny and made a run at Jeff, but after riding two classes I just hit my limit and just wanted to get second overall." Vohland a venged his loss in the 250cc Pro class with a clea n sweep of the 500cc Pro class. In the fir st moto Je ff Hicks shot out to the early lead over Vohland, Greg Zitterko pf, Mike H ealey a nd Scott Brown, but drop ped to third after the first lap. Up front Vohland pulled aw ay as Healey passed Hicks a nd set after Zi tter kop f. · On la p tw o H eal ey £:altght the ATK rider a nd challenged for the runner-up position. As th ey came around on lap three, Healey ha d passed Zitterkopf and stretched out a few bike lengths lead. Just before the h alfwa y poin t Hicks looped his big-bore Honda, all owing Brown to mov e into fourth. T he last few laps saw Brown put on an incredible charge and work his way past Zitt erkopf and ca tch H ealey. Wi th o nly four laps remaining Brown and Healey waged one of the best battles of th e da y as announcers Larry Nas ton a nd John Beth ea call ed the action. The two riders swapped positions four times before Healey gained th e upper hand. Wh en the c h eckered flag fell Vohland captured the win seven seconds ahead of Healey with H icks com ing back to edge out Brown before the finish. Zitterkopf was fifth. Vohland shot out of the gate in moto two a nd aga in pulled away as H ealey , H icks, Zitterkopf a nd Derek Brown followed. Scott Brown was ninth. On the fourth lap di saster struck Healey as he handed second over to Zitterkopf when his KTM se ized. T he engine failure ended a two-lap battle with Zitterkopf and advanced Hicks to third. Back in th e pack Scott Brown was co m ing o n strong and near th e fourth lap wa s sixth. The Kawasaki rider cont in ually picked tip positions ' until th e last lap where he finished fourth behind winner Vohland, runner-up Zi tt erkopf a n d Hi cks. Derek Brown was fifth . The 80cc Expert class provided some of the best action of the day. In the first moto Tommy Clowers led Buddy Antunez, J oel Albrecht, Jeff Grafton and Spud Walt ers around for the first few laps before Albrecht forced his way into the lead. As the two Kawasaki riders battled fo r firs t, Antunez slid out and lost a li ttle time. However , Antunez quickly remounted withou t losing a posi tion. As Anutnez tried making up lost time Albrect found himself on his head aft er collidi ng with Clowers: " I ha d the lead ," sa id Albrech t, "and Tom my (C low ers) ca me around on the outsi de and we loc ked bars. I went down. I tried to ge t up but my ha ndlebars wer e stuck in the ground." Up front An tu nez reeled in Clowers and bega n making his bid for the lead. Sho rtly be fo re the fini sh Ant u nez found wha t he was look ing for and motored past the Kawasaki r ider. Cl o w er s tr i ed to rep a ss Antunez in the final turn , bu t hi s Jeff Hicks (37H) and Greg Zitterkopf '(28) chase M ike Healey in t he first Ope n Pro moto. Hicks took second after Healey siezed in motq two. Eric McKenna (1 E) swept both motos in the Vet Pro class ahead of Ken ny Zahrt (1) and Dea n Perry (4 P). Dave White (39) was fourth ill eac h ro und. attempt was no good. Antunez me-t the checkers first ahead of Clowers, Grafton, Albrech t and Walters. Round two was not as spectacular as the first. An tu nez, Albrect and Clowers again pulled a n enormous lead over the pack before Antunez too k th e win and overall. Albrecht wa s second foll owed by Grafton, Walters and Damon H uffman. For th e second consecu tive week Eric McKenna domina ted the Vet Pro class and p u t in two perfect rides for the ov erall w in. Yamah amo unted Ken n y Za hrt chased McKen na in both mo tos bu t wasn't able to ma tch the Hond a ri der's speed.
