The trailing trio diced all the way with Mertens leading Springsteen and Lowe across the finish line. Brow and Springsteen, with 14 points each from the point paying heats, headed the eight-man field for the main event. Wyskiel, via four wins and a third in the heats, started in the third spot with Ingram rounding out the front row. Crowd favorite Mertens, series veteran Ed Morris, Scott Stump and Bryan Hardin rounded out the field, starting from the second row . Brow and Springsteen both jumped the first flash of the green starting light and were sent to the penalty line. Ingram then used a quick start to pull a lead on Wyskiel, the only rider who appeared set to cha llenge. Behind the front running duo, Springsteen shot up to fifth place after being last one the first lap, but fifth was the best Springsteen could do . Brow was also trying to move up from the rear but he tangled with Hardin, putting both riders down. Brow was out but Hardin restarted one lap down. As the race neared completion, Wyskiel closed on Ingram but fell exiting turn four and Ingram was home free. Wyskiel regrouped and finished second with Mertens taking third over Morris. • PEORIA, IL, JAN. 8 Results Bi tter cold winds faced race fans who ventured outside on their way to the Peoria Civic Cen ter Sunday aftern oon, bu t their fri gid trip s were worth it as they were treated MAIN: 1. Tim Mertens, the veteran flat tracker from Belleville, Illinois, had his best night ever on ice. Mertens lost only to Brow in round two, and earned 14 points in the heats to earn the number two starting position in the main. Filling out the front row were Ed Morris, who has competed in all 14of the annual Staton Lorenzpromoted ice race series, and Camel Pro star Dan Ingram. In his third year on the ice series trail, Scott Stump held down the pole on ro w two, having earned one point more than defending series champ Bryan Hardin. Hardin had a varie ty of problems with his bike during the night and finished the heats tied with Mark Wyskiel, who was the Rookie of the Year in last year's ice race series. The last starting spot in the eight-man field went to Jack Mayer, Jr., who edged Dave Rabinette in a tie-breaker. The first attempt to start the main saw six of the eight finalists jump the start, bringing out the red flag. Stump and Mayer were the only riders who had not left the line before the green light flashed and they were moved to the second row , which was now the front row, while Hardin and Wyskiel started on the third row . The next attempt at a start also saw the red flag come out as Mertens hit the ice in turn one. The rules state that if you cause the red flag to come out after being penalized once, you're out of the race. That was Mertens' fate. The third attempt was successful and Stump took the lead at the start. Bro w shot from row two up to challenge and had Stump in his sights , taking over the lead for good on la p seven of the IO-Iap race. Stump held on to the runner-up spot, wi th Morris taking th ird, ahead of Mayer, Hardin and WyskieI. • Results MAIN : 1. Ganh Brow (Hon); 2. SconStump(Hon); 3. Eddie Morris (Hon);p 4.
