Former Triumph factory team mechanic Pat Owens, an instructor at Los Angeles Trade-Tech College, and fellow professor Patricia Hollingsworth are running for e lection as members of the Los Angeles Community College Board . West German road racer Martin Wimmer will ride a Hein Gerickesponsored Aprilia V-twin in this year's 250cc World Championship. Wimmer rode a Yamaha TZ250, sponsored by Hein Gericke, in 1988. Shobert's best times were in the mid 2: 17s . (the lap record is 2:15.225, set by Suzuki-mounted Kevin Schwantz in the 1988 Japanese GP). "It went real well," Shobert said. "I liked the bike a lot and I'm looking forward to the year now." Shobert also competed in the Spalding Pro-Am Golf Tournament in northern California on January 78 . The Carmel Valley, California, resident was teamed with PGA Tour pro David Edwards, but the duo missed the cut by two strokes. "I had a great time," Shobert said. "It was a lot of fun . Dr. J (retired basketball player Julius Erving) and a lot of other celebrities were there." Another road racer who 's coming out of retirement is Jam ie Nicely of Reno, Nevada, who will campa ign a Ducati in 1989 AMA Pro Twins competition, and possibly some Superbike and Endurance racing , with sponsorship from Hot Tropic Activewear, a southern California-based apparel company. Nicely has been away from road racing for two years, and has ' been racing both Jet Skis and ATVs at the National level in the interim.
