And I did all this wit h a rear flat tire," said H ines. " I got the fla t rig ht at th e 70 mile mark and I rode with it u ntil 103 miles.' " Everyt hing was going good until the star t of th e second loop wh en my odo me ter q uit," sa id Bertram. In fact, th ere were two chec ks I sta lled lO go in - I cou ldn 't read the fli p cards and I co u ld n't q uite read the check mileage, soT was n't sure. I stalled and I was a m inute la te. T hat pretty m uch blew it for me as far as having a good day." Fo llow ing th e 34-m in ute lunch break Hines held a small lead over Roeseler - jus t three poin ts. Bertram was nin e points back. Hines' scorecard in loop tWO read 0-0-0-00-0-7-0-2; Roeseler 's 0-1-0-1-2-1-0-03, a nd Bertram 's 0 ~1 -0-1- 1-1 -1 - 1 -3-1. Bu t the decid ing final loo p was dominated by Hines. The 50-mile loo p included seven ch ecks where H in es wen t 0-2-2-4-0-2-0 (10 po int tot al ), Roeseler went 0-1-2-6-1-4-2 (16 pts .) and Ber tra m went 1-3-5-7-0-32 (21 pts.), Wh en all 26 chec ks were tallied , H ines tot al score was 52 a nd Roeseler's wa s 61. " I thought th e even t was su pe r," sa id H in es. " I think tha t th e Nationals shou ld be th at long. I mean , th e Nati onal s are ge lling lO the poin t wh ere th ey're ca tering to the C riders a nd th ey're gell ing too easy. Everybody's lOO close in poi nts (at the Na tionals }." O nly six riders a t Tecate scored under 100 points. Finishing second place to H in es in the Open class was desert mcer, Kaw asaki -m ounted Pa ul Krau se, who finish ed 87 points behind H in es a t 139 points. T hird went to SC ' Oll Lathrup w it h 152, while J o hn _ Ni el sen a nd Brent Walli n gfo rd . rounde d ou t the first five. Yamaha-mounted J immy Lewis fini sh ed th ir d in the 125cc class behind Roeseler an d Fredette with Donnie Simone fin ishing fourt h and Bryar H olcom b tak ing fifth.
