Stanton was the man who gav e himself a hard time in the first semi by go ing down in the whoops two laps after passing Bayle and going in purs uit of the Kaw asa ki d uo of Lech ien a nd Mariasevich, who held off the Fren ch ma n to the finish. Stanton go t back to six th by the finish to tra ns fer. J ohnson was determined to end Coope r's run , which had co ntin ued in th e heat. The two H ondas were locked together around th e first turn before Cooper wen t down hard on the ex i t. Coo pe r a lso missed the start of the main as d id Stanton and Bayle, so Johnson was th e favorite to clinch . the overall crown again. J ohnson had gated seco nd to Lechi en bu t again was too careful o n th e first la p a nd Gl over sneaked past. Gl over co u ld not hold onto Lech ien bu t was a match for every assa u lt by J ohnso n unt il half distance, by wh ich time Lechien was six seconds a head. But with the la ppers co mi ng into view, J ohnson 's cha nces of th e win were still very much a live. Less than a lap after taking second, however, J oh nso n lost it under the bridge where it was ge tting ex tremely slick. H e continued for a few more la ps a t a m uch reduced pa ce but th e fro n t end was bent a nd he pulled off th e track. At the sa me time J ohnson cras hed, Ba yl e a n d Dym ond we n t down together. The Fren chman also had to quit a nd Dymond had lost a lot of ground befo re continui ng . . At the front Lechi en march ed to a majestic win , while Gl over kept Ward a t bay for second with Matiasevich pa ssin g Van den Berk later on aft er the Dut chman had earlier had a good du el with Ward . Matiasevich had earlier gone down . with a hard charging Sta nton, a nd th e Honda new bo y was left to finis h sixth jus t a hea d of Cooper.
