Diem destroys Timonium Indoor ST Finale By Len Breech 26 TIMONIUM, MD, DEC. 3 After three runner-up finis hes and a late-race fall while leadi ng, Warren Diem fina lly put it a ll together to win the laSl 250cc race , a long with the class title, on his Tom Skethway/ Diem 's Cycle Maico a t the fina l race of th e Baltimore County Trail R iders/ Cockeysvill e Optimist Club-sponsored five race indoor short tra ck series at Timonium. The only large class cha mpionsh ip that was still up for grabs was the 250cc class wh ere Diem had to finish fifth o r better to claim the titl e from defending champ Larry Sweeten . Geo rgie Pr ice had clinched the 125cc titl e when th e o n ly rider with a chance a t the titl e. Todd Stith, had to withdraw du e to a death in the famil y. J oe White had clinched th e 360cc class the previous week, while Paul Crumling won h is first 250cc Pro ti tle wh en five-time cha mp Rodney Farris had his engi ne lock up while leading Crumling durin g th eir heal. Lew Woods took the lead fro m Diem a t th e sta rt of th e 250cc final with Mike Mester a nd Larry Sweeten behind him. Diem slipped un der Woods as th ey came off the seco nd turn o n the third lap a nd pulled o ut over a len gth in fron t of Woods. Sweeten had ta ken .o ver third a Iew laps later. and started to try to ge t by Woods . With fo ur laps to go, Sweeten tried to nudge his way under Woods as they entered the first turn, on ly both went down , g ivi ng Diem a large margin over Mike Varn es who inherited seco nd. Mike H acker , J ere Alexander and Roy Mill er were within four points of each other for the 80ce ,it le. It ended up with a tie betw een Mi ller and Ha cker [or the title. but no t until after p ictures had been taken wi th Hacker declar ed the winner was it discovered tha t th e prom ot er had for gotten to add the poi nts from the final to th e '01.11. They both had th e same points, with both having th e same win s, seconds and thirds. Rob ert Miller gra bbed ,h e lead from his co usin, Roy, Mark Jolly, Alexander and Mik e Hacker as th e 80cc class blasted off. Hacker fell o n the fifth lap , rejoining just in front of th e Mill ers , but on last place. The top four sta yed close un til Alexander co lli ded with Jolly bringing out th e red nag, and with only three laps left it was called. With no pr essure for th e points title, Georgie Pri ce jumped int o th e lead as the l25 s start ed their fma l with Steve Bromley, Brett Friedel and Bill y Bromley behind. Fried el slip ped under Steve as th ey bega n th e third lap, and Steve let Billy by since he was in a battle with Friedel for seco nd pl ace. As they were co min \: off th e final rum, Bill y tried to take o ut Fri edel , o nly to fall into th e wall him self. As th e closel y-bunched 360cc class ca me off the second rum, Rich Ro we had th e lead from points champ Joe Wh ite. Ch arlie Majeski a nd Mark Burkholder. About halfway through th e race , Maj eski slipped under Whtte for seco nd but he co uld n 't quite ca tch up to Rowe to effectivel y try a pa ss. With the Pro class titl e al read y in th e bag Paul Crumling, easil y jumped into the lead in front of Bob Sweeten, David Reeves, Mike Scott and Dave Miller. With Crumling a few lengths in front on his Pro Pla tes/ Ho nda of York -sponsored Honda. Sweeten and Reeves were bauling for seco nd wh ich went to Reeves when Sweeten fell in the lat e laps. SE&TRA president Mitch McRee co uld have finished the sevent h lap but stopped at the end of the sixt h lap WIth the comment that " I' ve had eno ugh mud" as he took third behind Hamrick. Willie Bradshaw dominated the Open A class o ver Wesley Mill er , who was riding his firsr race on a 500. David Alber t Sr. lapped everyone in his class and won the Super Senior aw ard. David Barri ck led th e first lap of th e 200cc A class , but Wade Baxley cha rged through the mud to win the class.
