Sulek storms to dirt - -o ne mile o n th e new S treets o f Willow Springs road ra ce track a nd tw o m iles ru n n ing up into the hills surro u ndi ng the hi gh -desert facility. Most of the rid ers found the track to be bo th fu n a nd challe ngi ng; "The paveme nt is real smooth with no bum ps," said 250ccBeginner wi nner J ean Meynet , wh ile 250cc Novice wi n ner R ich Lundin fou nd th e co urse to be , " Fast, bur not too rough. " The big race o f th e da y was th e Intermediat e/Expert class. which feat ured th e 250cc Rudder/ Summers ba ttl e. Rudder led at th e sta rt, and by th e second lap Summers had ta ken the lead o n th e din portion 01 th e track, p u ll ing away to ga in a six -second margin by lap four. Aga in, th ere was a bailie for firs t place o n the dirt ponion o f the tra ck . only this time it Was Rudder who ca rne out a head. Summers and R udder co nti n ued to battle, with Rick Daniel falli ng wa y behind in th ird. On th e seven th lap. Summers had trouble on th e steep d in uphill and Rudder triumphed. Summers held on take second with Daniel in third. " It was a g o o d st a rt," sa id R ud d er . " Summer s go t ar ound me and was leadi ng rnos t o f the race. but he had problems o n the uphill and I took th e lead a nd held it from the n on." Another exciting fight occ u rred in the sixlap 250cc Beginner race. wh ich was dominated by J ean Meynei, but no t without a fight. For the first three la ps Meyn ett and Leonard H a lder battled cons ta n tly for the lead , with H alder having so me difficulty cha ng ing from the pav emen t to th e dirt. But as th e race progressed. Meynet stre tched his advantage on the bike he'd bough' second-ha nd for a mere P ERRIS, CA, DEC. 4 Tony Sulek took hi s Hi gh Desert Kawa sak i KX I25 to th e 125cc Nov ice class win at CRC' s Merry Christmas GP a t Perris Racewa y. Wh en the starte r dr opped th e n ag begin the race J on Hughlett was th e first to ge l underwa y. Behind h im , T ony Barr anti, J ason Melt o n and Sulek were heading a large pack o f rid ers . As the ri ders began to so rt themselv es o u t, H onda J ock ey Rich ie Sh erman was o n th e gas and quickly moved up through th e ranks. By the end of lap two H ughlen had opened up a lair lead with Sulek a nd Sherman star ting to pull aw ay from Barranti; who in tum was receiving heat from Melton. On the next lap. Hugh let t weni from Iirst back six th with tra ces of a soi l sample o n his jersey. As th e riders appeared from the back section on the track. Sherman was in co m ma nd with Sulek o n h is rear fender. Fo llowing a sh ort distance behind were Melton, Barranti and Hughlet L Hughlett moved past Barranti and th en pa ssed Melton ' to mov e up in to third. The .battle for the lead was heating up as Sherman blew a corner, allowing Sulek to take the poi nt po sition, T he two riders battled for two laps before Sulek wen' into th e lead for good. As th e pa ce bega n to tak e its toll, H ug hi e" sta rt ed to slow a nd Melt o n closed in o n him. Barranti was passed la te in the race by Dean Ostrander and J ason Simmons. Up at the fro nt . Sul ek took a co m fortable win with She rma n, Hugh lett. Melt on and Ostrander rounding out th e to p five slots. Other action in th e Novi ce ra n ks saw Chris Ridgewa y tak e a co mforta b le win over Brian Nevesti ch a n d Dann y Stymache r. In the 250cc Novi ce cla ss Bill Sa u ro led Chris Leiker a n d Bud Donaton i to th e chec ke red n ag w ith Phil ip Wurster a nd George Andr ews ro u nd ing o ut the top five slots.
