At the end o f th e third la p th e order h ad cha n ged to H ynes, Ch ris Wi ll ba nks, T im Will ba nks a n d Davis. Tim Willb an ks was slowed by the Iirst of three'Ila ts tha t eventually dropped him fro m co mem io n. By the fifth and final lap Chris Willbanks was in the lead with H ynes breathing down hi s neck. The pair had pu lled aw ay Irorn th e pa ck and passed each other severa l times. They repeatedly ba nged into eac h other , a nd ea ch cra shed three times. On an extremely steep downhill H ynes en doed to th e base of 'th e s lo pe, while Willbanks fell while crossing a log a C yards ew do wn th e trail. They remoun ted 'a nd arrived a t the th ird check at exactly the same li me . T wo miles from th e finish , H yn es passed Wi llba nks Cor th e Iinal time by diving o ff a she lf trail a nd taki ng a longer bu t sm oother route through the valley. H ynes held o nto the lead across th e £inal mile o f prairie to th e finish. Third through si xth were Dav is. Staley , Steve Savala a nd Hockett.
