Alt ho ug h, aft er a ll thi s m one y ch an ges hands a nd a ll, th e co rpora tion en ds up with it. Still it has to ch an ge hands. One of the other factors in your decision was that G allin a is committed to running P irelli tires which are, as yet, u nproven, I looked a t it a few d ifferent ways . If I went o u t th ere with Pirelli tires and ma de a good showi ng I would have been a rea lly big hero . But th e cha nces o f it working th e o p pos ite way - gett ing tenths, eigh ths, how is that goi ng to look for m y fu tu re? Are people goin g to say well , is it th e tir es or he just can' t ride a 500. I just figured th at for me it 's how are people going to judge yo u in that resp ect. I just felt like I would learn a lot m or e from riding so meth ing th at I had a lot more co n fide nce in . Pirelli m ay ge t there, th ey ma y be there next yea r. But I don't kn ow that for su re a nd fo r me to take th e chance with a yea r th at 's reall y crucia l for m e, I can' t do tha t a t this point in my ca reer. If I'd have been o ver th ere before a n d rac ed I'd p robably look at it a lo t d ifferently. On the plus side of dealing with the Gallina team, you have a real, strong team that's established and has won two World Championships this decade. He has a test program and all of the support. How heavily did · that weigh in you r deci sion? It weighed rea l h ea vil y. I know, everyone knows, it 's no secre t, that with Am erican Honda - this being th eir first year trying to put this thing together - th ere's no way yo u ca n co m pare it with Gallina 's o pera tio n. Wit h hi s record, I don't think hi s bi kes ever broke o ne si ngle tim e la st year. And I look ed a t all of th at a nd weighed it a ll o u t. My on ly gripe abo u t go ing with th e Gallina team was th e p ossibility that I would definitel y have to run Pirell is. . Other th an that th e team is reall y co ncrete. G all in a feel s strong a bo u t th e P irellis. I don't think he went for th em just for th e money. H e did some checki n ~ and he felt that being on the Cagivas th ey didn 't ge t th eir fair test. He thinks th ey ca n be th ere. I'm sure if he didn ' t think th ey were good it wo u ldn ' t be fa ir to h is o the r sponsor, HB, because th ey're puttin g in a lo t of money. To ge t a little bit of ext ra m oney from someone else migh t m ake the whole th ing look bad. H e told m e to ch eck so me sta tistics from HRC, all th ese di fferent co rner spee ds from different trac ks. And h e sai d Mamola in th e turns was as fast, if not faster , o n a lo t of tra cks than a ny body else. He sai d he's seen him slidi ng arou n d a lot in certain pl aces. Has it sunk in h ow big a job it is to organize a Grand Pri x team on such short notice? Is th is something th a t you h ave to do or is it , as I understand, that Gary Mathers is the team m a n a ger un til someo ne is found? Basically a ll I'm looking a t doing is ge tt ing m y motorhome ready and getti ng a ll th at situa ted and ge tt ing my th in gs here at home situ a ted to wh ere I can leave. T ha t's th e only responsib il ity tha t I'm taking on for the job. I'm not go ing to have a n y part in ma naging it . H opefull y, I' ll get th e cha nce to a p prove o f th e guys they h ire. Make sure we ca n work together. I didn't want any part of tha t because for yo u r first year over there th ere 's no way I could manage the team lik e I did in th e U.S. What do you th in k is going to be the hardest part about it? The hardest p art 's go ing to be the rac ing, for su re. I kn ow th at I'm n ot over th ere to win , th at I'm over th ere to learn. Tha t's going to be th e hardest part , I' m prepared to do th at now. It 's just keeping th at a tt itu de that's hard. Don't go o u t in th ree races an d th en think th at yo u're ge tt ing closer an d th at you 're going to d o it th e n ext tim e then do so meth ing wupid lik e ge t hurt. It 's like climbing a ladder, yo u don 't wa nt to m iss a step. When you look at it ob jectively it seems like a big task. You've never been to the continent, you've n ever been on a 500, and tha t ki nd of st uff wo ul d deter a lo t of p eop le. The sca riest part ab out it is wh at if I jus t don 't lik e it. Absolutel y don't want to do it. T ha t's rea ll y scary and I' ve thought abo u t that, but I think I will like it. If I go with th e righ t attitude I'll learn to lik e and enjoy it and have a good time a t it. I'll probably co m e ho me a few times, but I' m getti ng prepared to spe n d as m uch ti m e the re as possible. I think th a t would be the best th ing for m e. Get over th ere and ge t in th e groove inst ead o f getti ng in th e groove an d com ing back here an d thinkin g abo u t bein g on th is su n ny hill pl a ying go lf: T his is a lot bett er th an that. I' m j us t go ing to get all o f th at o ut of m y system. . I wouldn 't even a ttem p t to go over th ere if I didn 't thi n k I co u ld do it. It 's like swim mi ng across th e ocean: If you d idn 't have th e idea in your mind that yo u co u ld do it yo u wouldn 't try it. So wh at is yo ur goal for this com in g seas on? To go ov er th ere a nd learn and mak e' progress. T ha t's basically it. See if I like it en o ugh to establish the goal of being World Champion. I don 't want to put pressu re on myself t o say I'm going to over th ere a nd in three years wi n the World Champi onsh ip. Then go over th ere an d not like it and do it jus t because I think I have to. I wa nt to go over th ere because I like it. It 's lik e I' ve done racin g in th e U.S. and that's probab ly one o f th e reasons th at I'm leaving ra cing in th e U.S. , because I don't en joy it like I did two or three years ago. O f all th e other things, it's just become no fun any more, although I lo ve the fans a nd th ere are a lot o f good peop le involved in it. Th ere were m o re ra ces la st year . .. I guara n tee yo u AMA racing probably lost more fans th an th ey could gain in five years. Like th e ra ce at Lima, Ohio . It 's th e kind of race in Lima wh ere there ma y be m ore of them next year th an th ere wer e th is year. The race wasn 't over unti l one or two :in th e morning. T he track, a fter every race, they d idn 't wa ter it a nd yo u co u ldn ' t see. It j ust wa sn 't any fun for me, but wh en I wa s a Novice I was raci ng in th ose types of pl aces a n d it was fun. The m ore dirt you a te the more fun it was. A lo t of peo pl e th ink th a t I've done a ll I could do in th e U.S. and now
