second with King trailing in third. King got by Miller a nd closed on Green at the end of the first go around. At the same time, Ronnie Correy began to chase down Miller. King took over th e point posi tion wh en Green went wid e in turn o ne on the final lap. Green 's bike slo wed dr asti calI y and Miller also got by. Fortunately fo r Green , he was abl e to limp across th e line wi th the fin al transfer spot. Pedersen 's problem s continued as h is motor seized in th e second sem i. King had the pole for the main, but it was Ermo lenko, fro m ga te five, with th e best start. Sch wartz started on th e o utside a nd he too k second away from Kin g as they ca me off tu rn two. Suddenl y Ermo len ko cu t in fro nt of Schwartz as th ey rocketed down the front strai ght. It was a n aggressive move and it was a lso th e mo ve th at sea led his victory. As they went through turn two on th e second la p , Schwartz went wide. King pulled alongsid e, but Sch wartz kep t the throttle on andfought off th e assau lt. ' By th e end of lap two, Erm olenko had the win u nder lock and key. When th e che ckered came down one circuit later, he had room to spare. Schwartz folIowed Errnol enko with King third. Mi ller, G reen and Castro rounded out th e field. " I made a good s ta rt a n d he (Schwartz) was th ere, said Ermolenko. " I went to th e inside, but I had to go up high because o f th e wa y I arced the corner. Coming down the back straightaway ' he go t hi s wheels in line alongside of me. Go ing into the corner, if I wo uld have went outside, he wou ld have passed me . I kept aiming for th e Inside and it forced him to rolI the throttle off. It pushed me way wide, but I think it was a smart mov e. It helped me get out front." For th e seco nd consecu tive year, the Skoal Shoot-Out was part of th e U.S. Long Track Championship a nd featured eight riders going four laps for $1300. The first three laps pa id $ 100 eac h to be in first, while th e leader of th e fin al revolution would po cket $1000. .Errnolen ko led every single circu it. Schwartz had a mech anica l failure before the start of th e race, and wh en the res t of th e field blasted o ff th e line he was left in the pits. ' Ermolenko, off gate eigh t, edged Kelly Moran into the first turn in' th e shoot-out. Moran tri ed to sweep around Ermolenko to collect th e first $100, but Ermolenko was too quick and he held the point. King, who started on the pole, en tered the pi cture o n lap two a nd m o mentarily stuck hi s front tire a hea d o f Moran, but seconds la ter dropped out. That let Collins into 'third. He had no cha nce of ca tch ing Ermolenko, but he did make a charge at Mor an . Erm ol enko took th e Will with room to spare. H e al so co llec ted all $1300: Moran barel y held off ColIins for seco nd. Pedersen, the on ly o ther rider to fini sh , was a distant fourth . .' In th e pits, a tired Ermol enko commented on the night's action. " I'm glad I won that Skoal ShootO ut. I told my son if I won that one he would get a new motocross bike.
