More th an 160 riders signed up for a full da y's racing with hosts SMX and the CZ Owner 's Cl ub. H a p J ones/S hoei-sponsored Bill Rip ley top ped the Vet Amateur class and ta ll ied a seco nd in the 250cc Ama teurs, ma kin g h is trip fro m northern Ca lifo rn ia worthw hi le. T he leader pi cked u p a rear fla t o n the fina l go -'round, but some excellent defen sive tactics let him reta in the lead LO th e fin ish . Bultaco rider R ipl ey had to work for hi s Vet Amateur victory, win ni ng th e first mo to, th en placi ng behind Greg Newland in race two. New Zealander John Boot e borrow ed a Lee Fab ry Yamaha YZ250 to top the 25.0cc Amateur class with a clean sweep over Rip ley. Honda four-stroke rider Graeme Fox cro ssed the line th ird each time ou t. Fabry rod e another YZ in th e 125cc Expert class, beati ng Ho nda rider Joe Broussard with a 2-1 score. The largest of four Cl-onl y classes toda y was th e 250cc Stoc k d ivision , with 18 riders. John Pavi ch and Chris Carter were th e sta rs o f the sh o w, leading th e way in both rounds. Pavich claimed th e overa ll a head of Carter and Col or ad o 's J ohn awa zh ki.
