Edi tor. The safest way In your. coverage of th e Daytona Pro-Am someone said that th e long chica ne was used to enha nce safety. This cou ld no t be further from th e truth. The use of th e long chicane resulted in at least a 10 to 20 mph increase in exit sp eeds a nd top speed was thus increas ed o n th e front straigh t. It is inco nceivable that an yone could possibly think that thi s would make the tra ck safer. This tra ck change is partially resp onsibl e. for my crash that occured a t th e ch ica ne exit. I am lucky to be alive and I thank .God and my Sh oei helmet tha t I am. I strongly suggest that in th e future th e track be run with th e sh ort ch ica ne as it is clearly the safest way.
