That Biker Mutts were growing in ran ks, and I dug deeper into their tail-wagging world. Not all dogs snarl and bark and chase our motorcycles. Ninotchka, my Siberian husky, with eyes as melancholy as Garbo's and that mystic quiet of hers, started me thinking about it. Dreaming about being a rider's pooch, and what it must be like in this creation of their owners' tall two-wheeled machines. No, Ninny never goes along with me, but she wishes she could - wishes she was small enough to jump aboard whenever I reach with gloved hand to smooth her pointy arctic ears. She watches me go, my exhaust sounding to her like a pack of cousin wolves, watching and listening until I'm out of sight. Then dream ing herself about other dogs that do ride. The lucky ones who speed away on those little tan k carpets, or on special bu ddy seats, riding with their owners into the far country. What must these four -legged compatriots think? What must they imagin e perched high on swift motors? Some peering through tiny goggles; others turning their snouts, avoiding the w ind to gaze back on the well-traveled road. Are they, these riding pups, at all philosophical about it? Do they m use and analyze just uiho 'in hell we motorcyclists are? Woof! Woof! (Y es! Yes! ) Of course th ey do! For example, this on e - th is owner has a nasty habit of banking too far in the turns. Yip! Yip! (Hang on tight!) And that one, that rider with the fancy fringed leathers, and howling ego! And w hat about the cyclists who pass up all those chances to rest, whose fuel capacities allow hundreds of miles nonstop? Whimper! Whimper! (G im m e a break! ) Certainly these bike hounds comtemplate th eir lives on the road. Years ago I met one named Ben, and later a cocker called Duchess - they 'd already ridden farther than I. Their .en richm en t, obvious. And just yesterday a couple of new' canine acquaintances passed my way. Scooter, so nonchalant about his long cold haul down from Canada. And another, who in her own terrier mix fashion eclipses all those p edigree-nam ed, her own wry signatu re, being her crown. S.O . Berin o Bozetta Chunk ita Colada! Motorcy clists to the co re, sharing that splendid spirit we all seem to possess. Cam araderie! Arf! Arf! (Please pardon if I sound Dogmatic!) William Edgar Copyright Page 3 Productions.
