The FIM has announced that they will abandon timed qualification at MX GPs next year, instead they will run two qualification races and a "last chance qualifier" race of 20 minutes plus two laps duration each the day before each GP. Russell edged out runner-up Dave Bertram (Suz) by 10 seconds at a t iebreaker. Mike Kiedrowski (Hon) was the overall winner in the 125cc P ro class and finished second overall in the 250cc Pro division at the Western States Memorial MX held in Blythe, Cali fo rn ia , November 11-13. Ty Davis (Suz) finished second in the 125cc Pro class wi th Broc Glover (Yam) taking third. DiStefano has recen tly begu n rehabilitation towards becoming " a totally independent, functional person" and will . soon be transferred from the hospital to a rehab center in Philadelphia, Pen nsylvania. "Mentally I'm stronger than ever," DiStefano said. Despite the injury Tony DiStefano suffered, the Tony D . Motocross School will continue to operate as usua l with approximate ly 30 schools scheduled for 1989. to be taught by a full-time instructor who has previously worked with DiStefano. AMA Professi~nal Motocross Manager Ro y Janson has announced that former National Champio ns will ' receive qualifying exemption at outdoor Na tionals next · year. Also announced by Janson was the elimination of .the J unior p ro MX license. The Pro-Am and Junior categories will be consol idated in 1989. No change will be made in the advancement points policy except that the total nu mber of points needed to advance to Expert will be raised to 180 points. This total is derived from the combination of the 60 points that was required to advance from ProAm to Junior and the 120 points that was req uired to advance from Junior to Expert. Voluntary advancement to Expert wi ll still be provided as described in the 1988 AMA Competition R ul e Book, except that the requirements of endorsement from the Motocross Adviso ry Comm ittee and th e AMA's distric t organizations will no longer be necessary .
