Warm or not , th e seco nd best ti me over the co urs e wa s 32 points, set by local rider Brian Blanch ard , a nd Hoess certa in ly was n' t com p la in ing abo u t th e win. . This was D.E .R.'s 25tl1running o f th e Delaw ar e Regiona l Enduro, and they were intent on maki ng it a good ride. Just short o f 500 riders started th e event, a nd the first few checks kep t th e riders o n th eir toes, because Tra il Bo ss C ha r l ie S tap lef ord decided to take po ints away right o ff the bat. The first three checks were back-t o-back points grabbers, a nd for mo st of th e riders t~ere was litt le letoff even a fter the first three checks. T he tra ils wound th ro ugh woods and field s in th e Delawar e landscape, and a li ho ugh they a ll loo ked ope n a nd rid eabl e, it was impo ssibl e to keep up th e speed average. Along the wa y, riders nego tiated suc h classic Delaware lan d mark s as Pucker Peak (a cli ff hang ing over a n a ba ndoned sand q uarry), the D,E.R. T o ur Bus (the she ll o f a discarded bus a long th e ro u te), a nd the infam o us Slu ice T rail (the o n ly really ro cky .s tr ea rn in Dela wa re ). T h e Sluice presented th e biggest cha llen ge to the rid ers, si nce it was mossy and slic k, and th ey had to ride it twice! Kaw asaki -m ounted H oess na il ed 27 po ints wh ich p ut him at the to p of th e heap, but 10 points mor e won the High Po int A tro p h y, and J immy Franks claimed th e honor on h is new Honda C R. Tom Na pier III scored a 53 point l oss, whi ch was the best A Husky rider squeezes through one of De laware Enduro Riders' favorite obstacles - an old bus. D.E.R. has a long-standing tradition of honoring th e rider who stru ggles th e mo st, as well as honoring th e fast guys, a nd the ir trophy for Low Score finish er went to Keith Krause, who managed to lose some 550 points along the route without houring out, making him co llect the worse score of the da yl In the A class, Todd Topham topped th e 125cc pilots with a 40 point loss , and John Flec k pos ted the best scor e of 43 in th e 200cc A class. . Paul Spampanat o dropped 37 points to beat the rest o f th e 250cc riders, a nd Andy Bylsma was the best in the A H eavyweight division with a 40. Edd ie T o th took a weekend o ff from hi s main pursuit of monster powerboa t racing to win th e Sen ior A class, 4 1 po ints to Scott Wolfersberger 's 44. Wolfersberger is a sa ilboa t racer, so it a ll sta nds to reason. J ohn Sm ith won the Four-Stroke A class wi th a 52. , J ohn Cooper, o nce aga in , won th e Su per Senio r class, this tim e by a slim margin - 75 points to Bill Edmundso n' s 113. Kathi Ca m be ll topped the Women's class with 99 points, a nd was a lso th e on ly fem al e to com p le te the cou rse. T he B L ightweight win ner (125cc) was Bob Sa uer, who ta ll ied to a 60 po int lost, wh ile the C class was la rge a nd heavy with poi nts , but there was noth ing in th e run to hurt a Novice class rider. Ron Mohn topped th e C Medium Li ght (0-200cc) class with 76 points, . Scores were fini shed and posted j ust an hour after the last rider was due in after the last loop, a nd th ere were no com plai nts or bad chec ks, o the r th an o ne sectio n tha t was hinder ed wh en fo u r locomo tives backed across a rai l cross ing a nd held th in gs up for nine minutes. The scores were adj us ted, though, and the train wandered back down the tracks and out of th e riders' way. Good com me nts abo u t the run were everywhere , while riders waited for th e sco res.
