Five rid ers con tested heat n umb er one and the win ner was Dan Ca hoon o n his Rotax. Hea t two with five riders was an Iwanaga runa way. In th e 12-lap fina l eight of the 10 rid ers go t fro nt row sta rts a nd th at left Kevi n Crow ley an d Craig Joh nso n to start from the secon d ro w. The final was marred with severa l spills, th e first of wh ich ca used a restart. Down and un abl e to prepare hi s ma chine for th e restart was Steve Mayfield o n h is Can-Am. O n the seco nd effort to get go ing Iwan aga grabbed an immediate lead aboard his H o nda sponsored by Lee Racing, Advantage Raci ng and Gi lro y Hon da. Following him o nly a few feel back was Cahoon , who worked up to seco nd a fter a horrible sta rt. Ra ndy Bereman lik ewise wo rked to gain th ird place by ge uing by J o n Nunez lat e in the race. As th e checkers came out th e fi nish order held. Getting fourt h was Johnson, who was impacted by J on Nu nez in fifth . The spill was' potentially serio us a s it took near ly 15 min utes to d isassemble the rear segment of J ohnson 's machi ne to extract Nunez's leg. Eventually al l in vo lved were ab le to walk away under th eir ow n power. In 250cc J unior class action it was smooth and fast J ake " Eart hq ua ke" Zemke o n his li q u id-co o led Yamaha th a t grabbed an im med iat e lead an d kep t it the whole distance. Chuck Bell worked into th ird behind J on es, the n fough t th e entire mot o to hold off Youngblood, Wes Keenum , Rob Hanson and Brian McE lroy. Keenum mad e h is move o n Bell , bu t momen ts lat er his bik e died , and Hanson dumped it in a turn. McElroy recovered fro m a poor start and charged to finish th ird behind J ones. You ngb lood an d Bell ro unded o ut the top five. The start of mota two saw Mann o ut fro nt followed by Hanson, Bell, Youngblood and McElro y. At the ha lfway point McElroy go t under Hanson then took off after the leader. Mann was more than six seco nds ahead, and at the checkered flag McEl ro y was clos e. but not close enough to cla im th e victory. Man n sai led in a few seconds ahead of McElroy as Han son, Youngbl ood an d Keenum follo wed. Kevin Fol ey took the ear ly. lead in the first 250cc A class mot o ahead of Gary Pa u l, Keith Eng lish , Earl May, Kevin Seidl and Man n. Befor e th e end of th e first lap Mann was o n Pau l's tail , bu t Pa ul charged mto th e lead a nd pulled away . Mann slipped under Fo ley a nd was soon back o n Pau L Man n go t arou nd Pau l, but found. h im hard to sha ke a nd cla imed the win wi th Paul seconds behind. Fo ley fin ished thi rd wh ile Ma y a nd English followed a d istance behi nd . Fo ley and Ma n n mi xed it up in moto two as Pa ul wa tched fro m his close third place posi tio n. Pau l wen t do wn , leaving Fo ley a nd Mann to ride o ut fro n t a lone. Paul remou nted without losin g position , but May closed the ga p and poured th e pr essure on . Man n dumped it in a tum, allo wing th e lead er to pull mor e than a 10-second lead before he was back on hi s way. Mann charged, making up some tim e, but Foley claimed th e win. KAHOKA, MO , 23 R ick Mun son came away with th e O pen Expert clas s win by taki ng bo th mot os han dil y in th e third round of th e Kah oka Fall MX Series. In rnoto one Munson took the holeshot wi th local ace R ick Patton right o n hi s rear fender. Pa uon challenged Munson severa l times for the first two lap s, but h is Honda seized as a result of an over ly tigh t bo re job . Munson cruised to the win, while Brad Jones o vertook J im Jo h nso n a nd Daryl Lill y for second. In mot o two Munson took the hol esh ot a nd ra n aw ay wit h the wi n. Lilly diced with J on es for a few corners, with J on es nudging pas t and holdi ng o n to seco nd at the lin ish . In the 250cc Expert class it was Brad J on es tak ing the star t with Marvin H en ricksen and J ason Hapke seco nd a nd th ird. J ones pulled away fro m He n ricksen a bi t, ' while Rich ard Yarrow moved past Hapke for th ird . Yarro w dropped o u t of the race o n the nex t la p, giv ing thi rd place back to Hapke. U p front, Henricksen mov ed in close to J on es, but was unable to pass and Jones took the win. Jones hounded H en ricksen for the ent ire mota an d, o n the last la p , o u tpow ered H enricksen's Suzuki on the lo ng uphill stra ig h t to take th e win an d tie up first place in the series wit h Henricksen. T here was lo ts of action in th e biggest class of the da y, the 250cc Ama teur class . Dave Brown got the ho leshot, while Pat Gordi n and SIeve Fisher had a fight for second with Fisher ma king his way around Gordi n before the end of lap o ne. Bro wn cruised to the win, wi th Fisher several bike len gths beh ind . Ha lterman made several passes and worked hi s way past Gordin a nd Todd Capstick for th ird. In mo to two i t was Bob Evans taking th e hol eshot with Ca pstick in second. First-more winner Brown go t a bad j ump off the line, but held the ins ide of th e first turn to take fou rt h, then passed Capstick in turn two. Brow n the n moved right In on Evans an d took th e lead on the long u phill stra ight o n the first lap. Evans held on 10 seco nd for three lap s o n ly. to be passed by Eric G ra y, who put on a fantastic cha rge after a mid-pack start, Brown too k the win j ust ahea d of G ray and Evans . MO, 23 It was a nip-and-tu ck battle between Chris Caplinger and Rusty Reynaud with th e lead ch angi ng severa l tim es before Reynaud took the point just prior to the finish to win the fin al even t of th e Black J ack Hare Scrambles Ser ies. Caplinger bobbled sligh tly when he hit a bush just 100 yards from the fini sh to allo w Reyn aud ju st the margin he needed to move into th e lead. It was an enjoyable battle for spec ta tors to wa tch, whi ch would ha ve lik ely been a three-way. challen ge had Pat Sm ith not broken hi s cha in just after th e start, It had been almos t two years since th e Missouri Mudders have run a dry event, th erefor e. agai n living up to their nam esake. Ra in for th e p revious two da ys discouraged a few potent ial competitors, but th e hardy participants were pl easantly surprised as the weather cleared a nd a sunny, coo l da y greeted th em . Thou gh initially the terra in was slick, it soon beca me tacky, making for a grea t event. Alm ost half of th e nine-mile course was made u p of new , tigh t trails in the hilly terra in, pro viding a challen ge for nov ice and exper t rid ers a like. One very steep downhill. that competi tors sai d seemed to get steepe r eac h lap , along with severa l creek crossi ngs provided a cha llenging a nd fun co urse, while the tightness helped to elimi na te inj uries . The win ner com pleted five lap s in two hours, 13 mi n u tes and 58 seconds . Only six r iders finished five laps wi th in the two-hour time limit.
