The Wild One so ld Triumphs (Brande 's real life m ount as well as hi s character's bike in th e movie) in the 1950s better th an any adv ertisem ent they co u ld buy. Then Easy R ider ca me to th eaters in the late 1960's an d cho p pe rs swep t th e world. It was soon followed by th e TV movie a nd series Then Came Bronso n, which touted touring. And yo u remember how On Any Sunday, released in 1971. popularized th e offroa d raci ng sport an d recreation. The n ext cine ma tic shot in th e . behind for the motorcycl e image co u ld be " Ame r ican Built, " th e fo urthcom in g feature movie about a roa d ra cer an d h is two loves. Will Am eri can Built be a new milestone m ovi e in o ur motorcycle history? I ho pe th e movie is a good one, because th e producers ' asked to use our Cycl e N ew s image in some scenes. " G o ahead l" I told th em, crossing my ra cing fingers for luck. Often th ese movies serve-up mixed bles sin gs. Will American .Built change our little world? What can we do abo u t it ? Well, we co u ld denounce it, like th e church es did with Last T emptation. That should sell a few more tickets. But let us wait until we see American Built before we co m m ent further. '- .... .. _ ... ' 1: The Road to Laguna Seca No singl e even t in recent m emory aroused ' as much interest a m o n g motorcycle racing fans as did the U.S. Gran d Prix at La guna Seca this past spring. In addition to th e estima ted 80,000-plus spec ta tors wh o were o n' ha nd to pe rso na lly witness th e event, mill ions watch ed th e rac e on liv e TV arou nd th e world a nd on a de layed tape basis in this co u n try th e followin g wee ken d. For m onths aft er th e event. GP.fever contin ued as m ot orcycle magazin es co m p eted with one another in presenting multi-page spreads on the World Championship Road Race Series round. This videotape, The R o a d to Laguna Seca, is j ust what the doctor didn't order because it'll definitely bring GP fever back.to any " pa tient " who watch es it. The n earl y h our-long tape ca tches a lot o f th e behind-the- scen es m oments th at th e network TV producti on didn 't have time for. You 'll peek in side th e tents th a t served as pit area "garages" for th e teams. You 'll see th e shipping co nta iners th at served as storage areas for th e eq u ip me nt, a nd you 'll see th e b ikes being cra ted u p after th e event. But th e n ame of th e ga me is racing a n d racing is wh at is best delivered here. Both th e 250cc GP, which Jim Fi lice won, and th e 500cc GP , which wa s wo n by two-time World Champi on Eddie Law son. receive m ore th an h ighl ight foo tage. The tape does h ave a maj or drawba ck and several minor glitches. T he drawback is n ot that it was sponsored by Am erican H onda with th e id ea in mind o f sell in g it in H onda deal ership s, and a t times it comes very close to resembling a Honda co m me rci al. Although the p lans to sell it a t H onda dealers have been dropped. the tape carries Honda's lo go. In line with the fact that Ame rican Honda sp o nsored th e tape, Rothman s Honda's defending World Champion Wayne Gardner is intervi ewed severa l times , as is former H onda factory rider Freddie Spen cer . T h a t's all well and go od, but wh ere 'are interviews with th e lik es o f Marlboro Yamaha 's Eddie L aw son , P ep si S u zu k i's Kevin Schwantz, Luck y Strike Yamaha 's Wa yne Rainey or 'Cagiva 's Ran dy Mamol a ? In add itio n, we're sh own th e H o nda di splay tent a t Laguna Seca a nd H onda str eet bik es parad in g aro u n d th e track , but no views of th e other manufacturers' displays are offered. In th e otherwise excelle nt op en in g portion of the tape that provides us a look a t GP raci ng in th e sixties and early seventies, we're almost led to be lieve that Honda's arriva l on th e scene was what rea lly made GP rac ing . Admittedl y, it is mentioned tha t after their n onsuccessful early attempts at 500cc GP road ra cing, th ey opted to rem ove them selves from the scen e for several years. Oh we ll, somebody had to foot the bill. Glitches? Kevin 'Sch wa n u 's last name is mispronounced throughout the tape by Bruce Flanders, wh o did th e narration voice over. The "an " in Schwantz come s out like in " and " rather than "on," And at least one front running 250cc com pe titor is ~. mi sidentified. A plus for th e tape is th e previously m entioned foo tage o f vin tage GP racing, in cl u din g some of th e legendary. MV Ag usta team o f th e sixties and ea rly seventies. There' s a lso a brief look at yesteryear Am eri can ra cing, incl u ding the likes of Joe ,Leo nard a t Laconia, Gary Nixon a t Daytona aboard a fa ctory 250 cc Yamaha , a nd Kenny Roberts o n dirt an d tarmac. Wr itten , produced and directed by Denis T orre s o f Seals Communications, producers of the weekl y TNN TV show,MotoWorld , the tape will , be avai la b le in September and advertised o n th e sh ow for ordering by telephone for $49.95. Now . if you'll excuse me, I'm go ing to wat ch it again and rai se m y body temperature up to GP fever level. In fact, I'll probably watch it severa l tim es between now and April 16. 1989, wh en th e GP circ us co mes to Laguna Seca aga in. Jack Mangus
