Lowma n had a battle lor lirst going lro m the
start. First Lowman had the lead then Murray
took it back, then Lowman came back. O n
the last lap , Murra y dr afted Lowman headi ng
lor the star t/finis h line a nd pas sed Lowma n
at the line lor the win . When as ked il he had
any tro ub le, Murr ay rep lied, "T he clutch was
slipping a nd [ wa s tryin g to nurse it in th e
beginning . a nd when I was ab le to gel past

an d just go for it.
The Middlew eight Superb ike was another
Roos wi n . ho wever , th is one was no t a
runa way. There was a crash in tu rn o ne a n d
severa l rider s th ought th e race was goi ng to
be red-n agged. The Flagman was changing
lrom the yello w flag to the ambu lance nag
and a coup le 01 riders misread the nag beca use
it was no t-fully extended at tha t po irit, a nd

the last la p . heading fo r th e last tu rn, Gristic

Right behind h im in third was David Clyde
aboard his Honda CBR6oo.
T he Hea vywe ight Superbike race was al so
won by Roos, a boa rd his Yam a ha FZR4oo.
When asked what it was li ke running a 400
mach in e in th e H eav yweight class, Roos
rep lied , " I had to rid e rea l har d. I knew tha t
in o rder to win th is race I had to ge t a good
start a nd ge t the lead early in the race if
possible,"

Going onto the ba nking Roos passed Greg
H arrison for seco n d place a n d th en went after
Bruce Neild. Roo s pa ssed Nei ld going back
into th e in field, taking the lead wh ich he was
able to keep until the end lor hi s big win ,
ridin g a 400 in th e H ea vyweigh t race .

two class wins each in the 125/250cc G B and
125/ 250cc C classes, respectively, at Muddy
Cr eek MX in ro u nd live 0 1 th e AMA ·

P ros while Ji m Ches ter edged Steve Ch ildress
for the 250 Pro honors.

Brown led the lirst 250cc Pro lrom sta rt to

an ea rly spi ll but managed a th ird place finish
over Robbie Taylor .

Downs did n't get a good start all day bu t still
came o u t the winner in 125 and 250cc B action
with 3· 1 a nd 2-2 scores, respectively, Dow ns'
125cc victory was particularly hard-earned as
his Barr/Maier/Smi th-backed Yam aha was
ru nn ing poorly in th e firs t mote. Downs
pull ed 011 a th ird p lace finish.
Alter a cha nge III hi s bike's jetting, Downs
rock eted [ro m seventh at th e sta rt to firs t at
the n ag in moto two to net io p 125cc B go ld
in a tied score over Kawasak i's J eff Shu ler who
tallied 2·2. Ch ad Lou gh won the first moto
but was sidel ined lor the day a lter a cras h in
the ope ni ng 250cc B moto.
