Racing Enterprises Presents -iT contingent decided th e minimun for the class should be set at 275, which was more than Vesco and Pap pas bu i lt th e interim rear axle for . H owever, both at Speed Week and at this meet , problems which kept surfacing due to salt corrosion from the 198\ meet kept the vehicle well below th at speed. This tim e it was a taper-lock hub which Pappas had to heat so he co uld adjust tension on th e drive belts. Bol ts which had apparently crystallized broke on th e first run, th en the belts went. After this was fixed Pap pas increased hi s speed to th e 222.883 tim e but lost a turbo at the end of that run. For some rea son the turbos weren 't making boost a nyway, but th e system wouldn't run well witho u t them. With th e Vesco group was Bonneville ph ot ogra ph er G lenn Freud en berg er, with th e same Yam ah a TZ750 ' he brought to Speed Week. Freud too k up where he left off at Speed Week, when he failed to back up a return record run. On the first da y of this meet , Friday, he set a record of 176.406 in the APS-AG-750 class , worked on T eam Vesco Projects on Saturday, and set a record of 171.713 in th e APS-AF-750 clas s on Sunday. Fuel does not actually have to be used in the Fuel cla ss, if you ca n go fast eno ugh without it. His down record run Friday of 178.394 makes the bik e on e of th e very few 750s to ever run over 175 at Bonnevill e, the div iding line between short co urse bikes and long co urse bikes. The motorcycle was prepared by Steve Haug. :like Freud of the Seattle area. It did well as a road ra cer, a nd has been little changed. Also in Don Vesco 's entourage was Lee Martini who works with Vesco Bonneville photographer Glenn "Freud" Freudenberger rode a Yamaha TZ7S0 to I record 176.406 mph in the APS-AG750 class. at his shop, with a newly-rebuilt '86 Yamaha FZRIOOO, an o th er road racer, campaigned on th e track by Cal Ra yborn III. Ma t'in i used worked-over 40mm Lectron carbs, a N&H competition pipe; Megacycle cam, and ported the engine. Don McCarley, ace mechanic with Ri ck Vesco's dea lership in Brigham City, Utah helped with jetting, a nd Martini worked hi s way up to a record of 173.724 in the M-AGIOOO class, and 169.172 in th e Fuel class. · Another Vesco contact was Robert Wallace, a n ow ner-operator trucker from Denver. Wallace's claim to fam e was not th e bik e's time as suc h, 151.375 against a 165.00 minimu m in the A-ABG- 750 class, but th at he built up a motorcycle th at fast with a total investment of ab out $500. He started with a wrecked '85 Kawasak i 750 turbo, used mo stl y available parts and a lot of time. Wallace's bik e was ably. ridden by Moonlight Racing's Pete Steuri, motorcycle quartermile record holder at the local strip , Bonneville Racewa y Park in Salt Lake City. This is on ly the second year for th e World of Speed Meet, and motorcycles have not been much promoted yet for it. The sponsoring club, the Uta h .Salt Flats Racing Associat ion, means to get serious next year a bo ut in viting top Bonneville bik es. USFRA meets are mu ch reli shed by racers. That 's wh y at a meeting of th e Bonnevill e 200 Club ca lled during the event, 63 members were cou n ted, thought to be the largest gathering of the group ever. USFRA meets are smaller and less cro wded th an th e Southern Ca lifornia Timing Association ' s Speed We ek, th ough no less professionally managed, in cluding th e able work of th e same chief tim er, Gary Cagl e. . And the weather was perfec t. Bonnevill e, which is notOTlOUS for rai n a t all the wrong tim es, fluk y, unpredi ctable blows, and too dry or too wet a surface, co uldn 't have been better. Nine miles of good salt, su n, coo l air, almos t no wind, and hardl y a ny lines.
