By the seco nd lap Stoller had p ulled away a nd Tidey had pulled the ru g o u t from . un der Rewis to claim second. T idey wen t dow n o n the third lap and dropped to eigh th, while Shal e Anderson was steadily ga ingi n ground a nd wa sn 't lo ng befor e he unseated Griffi s and was o n Richburg 's tail. Stoller , Rewis. Rich bu rg and Anderson stead ily held their po si tions but Griffis lost fifth to Gary Allred. Those wh o made th e Dunlop/ Sco tt USA· sponsored ra in date were treat ed to a co u rse and 'wea ther co nd itio ns th at were 'descr ibed as perfe ct, especially for Mark Goertz, wh o was today 's overall winner. Dunlop's Fra nk Stacy, o n a H onda CR500, led the Pro class into turn o ne. Ten m iles later. Stacy had a IO-seeond lead foll owed by Steve Ca rdw ell , Mark Gocru, Cliff Goertz (Mark's cousin) , Doug Paley, and Cha rli e Martin in fi fth pl ace. StacY's lead came to a n ab rup t ha lt two miles into the seco nd loop. Ca rd well led through the sco ri ng area at the sta n of lap three, but Mark Goertz pushed hi s KTM past Ca rdwell going into th e river bo tto m part o r th e co urse. They were fo llo wed by Cliff Gocru and Ch arli e Mar tin. Ca rd well seemed faster o n th e MX part of the track a nd aga in took th e lead o n la p five, but Mark Goertz was never far out o r h is roost. Pittman jumped to a n ea rly lead in th e 750cc Su perbike, while P in ksta ff wa s engaged in a lon g dice with Do ug Renfrow for second.
