T here was someth ing R EA L to do! Sudden ly I was sitting bolt upright. holding the clock lik e a hand grenade.. T im e to rise! T o ride to La guna Seca again! So lo I rode th e best roads I know , stopping on ly for gas, and an apple still war m from my leathers' deep pocket. T he em pty good h ighway unfolded in front of me. T he sun moved high er. T he race at L aguna w'as about to begin. T hen - yes! I was f in ally up t here on th ose Mont erey h ill s, dry an d brow n n ow, not last A p ril's pa inted green. And a sou nd came echoing from Th e Corkscrew lik e th e how led oaths of w inged beasts - th e Indy Car race had already started. I parked m y bike and we n t and watched. I wa lked up the pill, up to the top, to th e oaks" and th e tuiisties, and felt th ose Big Quads blastin g right on thr ough . L ook! T here w as Foyt! And Fitt ipaldi! Little A I! Mar io! It w as exciti ng and sens ual and they we re fast as all hell. Faster than th e bik es, faster around than our quickest GPs! But I missed th em - th ose diving, k n ee-dragg i n g , sc ream in ' tw o strokes th at put our riders sm ack on th e batt leli ne. Motorcycles an d Cars! Th at endless argument! This Cal if orn ia track 's season ope ne r and closer - it's what th is road war is all about. T o test the Champions, L awson on two an d Sullivan on four. T o g ive us both sides of racing's best. At La guna Seca! And come April 16th we'll all be back. For th e bik es. For our United Stat es Grand Prix. For Edd ie and for R andy an d for th e rest of th e guys. When th ey do it all over again!
