Aides for Democratic Presidential candidate and Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis have indicated that the state's Motorcycle Safety Fund will be restored during the fiscal 1989"year which began October 1 . Earlier this year, Dukakis vetoed the fund in an effort to help balance the state's budget. Frank Keefe, secretary for the state's office for administration and finance stated, "In the next appropriate supplemental budget request, it is my int e ntio n to incl ud e a proposal for motorcycle safety programs, to be supported from t he existing Motorcycle Safety Fund." Motorcyclist groups had p lanned a weekend long ' sit-in at the Massachusetts State House on the weekend of September 23. In an attempt to avert the p lanned demonstrat ion, Dukakis a ides requested a meeting with protest organizers. Bill Gannon, repres- eriting the Motorcyclist Riders Foundation and the AMA, was among the motorcyclist activists who met with representatives of the Governor's office on September 23 . " Be fo re I attended that meeti ng the Boston Po lice Department had endorsed (Re publican Presidential cand idate and Vice President) George Bush and he was going to appea r in Boston to accept their endorsement the day before our s it -in w a s scheduled to begin. The Po lic e Department contacted us an d requested that we not ho ld ou r demonstrat ion because th ey d id n 't want to 'throw egg o n the face ' of Dukakis .two days in a row. At the same t ime we hea rd t hat t he Governor's office w a s t ry in g to re a c h us to o ffe r a compromise. We actually called off the sit-in before we met w ith Dukakis ' aide s ." Dukakis' veto action t his past J uly essentially ro b bed Massachusetts riders of the motorcycle safety prog ram that they'd paid for. The program was supported by a $2 increase in motorcycle registration fees . • ~ "J Charles K. Thompson, 56, former presiden t and ch ief operating officer of Harley-Davidson, died from . a heart attack suffered on October I. " Thompson j o i n ed Harley a s national sales manager in 1969 after operating a Harley dealership in L oui sv ille, Kentu ck y: H e was appointed president in '1980 and was a key member of the management team that executed the leveraged buyout of Harley-David son fromAMF. As a Kawasaki rider, Yvon won five National C hampionsh ip road races in the early seventies, winning Nationals at Talladega, Road Atlanta, Charlotte a nd Ontario (Ca lifornia). But the French Canadian is perhaps best remembered for crashing while e ither in the lead or fighting for the lea d .in other races, particularly the Laguna Seca National. According to reports from Australia, Superbike sensation Michael Doohan will test a Rothmans Honda at Phillip Island in January. Reported ly, Doohan w ill join fe l- lo w Aussie and 1987 500cc Wo rld Champion Wayne Gardner in the scheduled test at the site of the Apri l 9 Australian Grand Pr ix. Doohan, who rides for t he Marlboro Yamaha Deah;tr Team in Australia, has piqued the int e re st of more than one Grand Prix team and will undoubtedly joi n the GiJ circuit in 1989.
