That Fall had come, an d our ridin g trails and roads were at their zenith agam. It was a tim e of fall ing leaves and fallin g curue balls, fall ing temperatures and - oo ps! - dreams of fall ing, too. I fell from bed right into th e sadd le, sti ll dark out, th e night a giant net for shooting .stars. Th e p rice ojuacatio ning had fall en too, dropped to somethi ng near R easonable! So I was on m y way! And, rid ing th e paths of early Octob er, I fell in lov e all over again . For forty someth in g days, through H alloween and on to T hanksgiv ing, th is would be the World Series of w hereto-go, tha t riders' au tumnal flin g before w int er stalked in. And look! Th e '89 models were coming out " also, stream li ne d an d trick , and everybody offering th eir newest Dual Purpose. W ith budding fai rings 'and luggage racks! T he choices, staggering! T here was even a neat British clubman ready to bu y, span ki ng new , black -green , w ith spo kes f rom Japan! A hh h! Th e Fall! Th is Ch am p ionsh ip Season! L ast of the weekend dirt tracks and hill climbs, end of th e hare and hounds, th e year's finale for road racing enduros and hoop smo ki n' drags. Th e closing turkey runs, and lin gering stageboui of our Dixie m ot ocrosses. It was an other year's fa rew ell from th e vintage wars, th e observed trials, th e Baja battl es. Th at m ystery and magic of a race crowd's assembly, of bringing togeth er th e even t for its on ceagain life before it disbands and ·van ishes. And, fo r so many of us, that heralding of our first sn ouis of winter and its unridable roads. T he Fall! Wak ing in a pre-dawn frost from an American fan tasy - w here we carz motorcycle our sou thwest can yons and deserts forever, or freely all-year take on our su btrop ical lands, or ride eternally under the volcan os of our faraway isles. Bu t then! - to dream fresh also of new times, of yeararound stadium even ts, of Spring and Summer agai n, all of th ose races to come , re-anointed pavement s and dirt and rock lan ds and h ill sides! Mo torcycl e com bats not yet conceived on m ot orcycles not yet per[ected, som e still bein g tried in exo tic hideaways way below th e Equator. T he Fall! Th e th ing is to keep on riding! A Iways!
