Honda CR500-mounted Steve McSwain . from North Carolina. f inished fourth overall and took second in the Open A clas s . shift-side foot peg. That left Shephard and Brown back in the second and third 'p osition s and allo wed Summ er s to co n tin ue o u t front without pr essure. Pl essinger reentered the ra ce ju st in front of McSwain , wh o was being chased by Loj ak , Rodgers, Coo mbs, and CR2 50 rider Kresic. As th e race wound down to a close Summers contin ued stretching. hi s lead , ins p ired by th e th ou ght of fin all y posting an overall win after so many close a nd hard lu ck calls. When th e checkered flag waved at th e three hour mark Summers was cl ose to four minutes a hea d of Shephard, who had put hi s big YZ490 on cruise control towards th e fini sh . Brown was just about a minute and a half later coming into the barrels with the 250cc A win, while McSwain and Lojak accounted for fourth a nd fifth overall. Plessinger's luck went from bad to worse when he ran his Kawasaki o ut of gas in an attempt to ca tch Brown a t the end. He would finish an ironic 13th overa ll , fourth in the 250cc A class behind Bro wn, eighth overall Kresic, and overall Martin Daubert . Rick Claxton, a Minneso ta Kawasaki rider, was fifth on the day . By virtue of his first overall performance Summers was taken out of the Open A results, leaving the first place trophy to Shephard.
