The Rockland, Massachusetts, Fast By Ferracci Ducati 851 rider rode onl y as fast as he had to, to narrowly defeat 1987 champ Doug Brauneck on th e Dr. J ohn 's Mota-Guzzi. Quarterl ey maintain ed a constant interval over th e second-pl ace Geargian; leading flag to flag and posting a 0.24-second mar gin of victory at a n average speed of 81.982 mph. The Guzzi spo rted some new par ts this weekend, most noticeable of which was a new exha ust system developed by Rob Muzzy. The twi n p ipes cross over underneath the engine, with si le n cers that flar e outwards just in fro nt of th e rear wh eel. Dr. J ohn Wittner had also done so me work with Crane Cams and tested at Bryar Motorsport Park in Loudon, New H ampshire. T he result was a po werba nd that moved peak horsepower up from 9000 to 9700 rpm , with no noticeable loss of mid-range power. Mid-Ohio winner Doug Chandler was slated to ride Martin Adams' RS7 50 -powered C ommonwealth Honda , but Chandler experienced a tendonitis-like condition in his righ t wrist and decided to concentrate on th e Superbike race. Kevin Erion, who 'd done som e testing on th e bik e earlier this year, signed up at the last minute, but was hampered by a lack of practice. Fast By Ferracci 's Pete Johnson, who usually rides his Modified Production-class Ducati F-I in this class, sat out Sunday's rac ing after crashing twice on Saturday (vintage practice and the endurance race) . Cagiva North Ame rica's Duane Su mmers moved up to fifth on hi s Du cati F-I , the first of a brace of Modified Production-class ri ders who also contested th e GP race. Mark Yarro w (Ya m ), Ward Rodgers (BMW) and Aaron Rueger (Duc) had a dogfight for sixth place, with Yarrow getting th e nod o n lap 12 wh en Rogers ' BMW fell by the waysid e and Rueger crashed in tum I I. It appeared for awhile that Brauneck was taking it easy, setting up Quarterley for a late pass, but when Brauneck did make his move, Quarterley upped the pace appropriately and remained out front when it counted most. Adamo, Shemwell and Summers rode lonely races to third, fourth and fifth, respectively, Kev in Erion (788) leads Pete Johnson (1 ) and Mark Yarrow in the Modified Production race . Erion took the championship in his first Pro season . with Yarrow , Gordon Seim (Du e), Ely Schi ess (Due), Rodgers, limping home, and Arthur Chambers (Duc) rounding out the top 10. "I didn 't kn ow if th at was Doug (Brauneck) behind me," sai d Quarterley in th e winner's circle. "They changed exha usts this week and it sounded different. I Two Brothers Racing's Kevin Erion completed a near-perfect rookie season by wrapping up the Pro Twins Modified Production clas s titl e with a runaway win at Sears Point Ra ceway . At the end of a year in which th e points lead see-sawed between the two friendly rivals, it was th e rookie Erion defeating th e vetera n Johnson in the point standi ngs, 89 to 81. Championship contender and 1987 cham p Peter Johnson finished a disappointing seventh aft er sufferi ng through a miserable weekend. "The kid's too fast, " said J ohnson 's sponsor and tuner, Eraldo Ferracci, in refere nce to Erion. Duane Summers lau nched his Ducati F-I into the lead at the start of the race, leading the 14-rider field. Erion moved from fourth to second in one lap, while Johnson held third, Yamaha-mounted local rider Mark . Yarrow was fourth , and Du cati Fl-rnounted Alaskan Aaron Ru eger fifth. Erion passed Summers for the lead in turn lion lap two, and proceeded to o pen hi s margin over second place to as much as seven seconds, averagi ng 77.79 mph. Rueger, meanwh ile, co mpe ting in just his second pro fessional race , go t by both J ohnson and Su m mers to nab second. H e was pursu ed by BMW-mounted Ward Rodgers, and th e du o - circ ulat ed the trac k at a frantic pace, clo sing Erion's mar gin of victory to just 2.82 seco nds at the checkered flag . Reportedly, there had been some su spicion that they were running a stroker crankshaft, but AMA tech inspector Kevin Cameron found nothing illegal. I threw it away a co up le of tim es learning, but he built a hell of a bik e. I've never had a mechanical DNF. " I also want to thank m y brother Craig," he added.
