AMA/Yance & Hines 600cc Supersport Series: Final round Deveau wi as, Polen crowned By Paul Carruthers Photos by Henny Ray Abrams SOMOMA, CA, ocr. 2 Sears Point local David Deveau won his first-ever AMA 600cc Supersport final after a race-long battle with his endurance partner Mark McDaniel ended when the latter crashed on the final lap. Doug Polen, however, was the biz wi ig wlI~ner a~ h e eli h ~d th e me 600ee title WIthout having to 10 turn a wh eel in th e final. Polen elected to pull off the track after the warm-up lap when he had made sure that the only man with a chance of topping him in the championship, John Ashmead, would not be able to make the grid. Ashmead had crashed on the wannup lap of his heat ra ce, breaking hi s collarbone. After McDaniel excu sed himself from the activities Honda-mounted Deveau cruised in some three seconds ahead of Suzuki-mounted Bri tt Turkington, who iii tum had ~o tten the better of David Sadowski In a ra celong duel. Dwayne Chung, Paul Bray , Tom Aqu ino, Mike Kr ynock, Cal vin Rayborn III. Doug Toland and Peter Carroll rounded out the top 10 finishers. The first 600cc heat race o n Saturday was a battle between the faststarting Sadowski and Pol en . T he T exan en ded up getting the better of the New H ampshire resident wi th McDaniel finishing third. The big drama in th e seco nd heat race took p lace prior to the gree n flag. Ashmead cras hed the Peter Brad y-sp onsored H onda o n th e warm-up lap in turn two, a nd was in the a mbu lance whe n th e pack , headed Into tu m one. The second hea t race was all Bra y as he held off first Larry Schwarzb ach and then Deveau in taking the wi n. With Polen coas ting into pit lane after the warm-u p la p, Bra y again grabbed the hol eshot in th e final. H e led Rayborn, Sadowski and McDaniel across the stripe on the firs t lap, bu t the race was stopped by a redflag wh en a rider went down in tum 10. T he res ta rt sa w a completel y di fferent result as Turkington led Deveau a nd McDaniel. Sch warzbach cras hed in turn 11 at th e end of th e fi rst lap. Unl ike the first sta rt, Ra yborn and Bray were mid-pack. By th e third lap, Deveau held a comforta ble margIn over McDaniel with Turkington holding down third, and coming under attack from Sadowski. By th e fifth lap, McDaniel was beginning to press Deveau as the two locals left the others behind. McDaniel seemed 'to wait until the perfect moment, leading the way across the stri pe to start the final lap. When they reached turn seven, however, wi th McDaniel holding a semicom fortable lead, the Santa Rosa, California resident crashed, gi ving th e win to Deveau. Turkington inherited second with Sadowski taking third. " H e got by me and he would have had it," Deveau said. " It seemed like a 100-mile race. My wrist started hurting (he broke it three weeks a~o at an endurance race in Memphis) and I was just trying to block him. " Deveau rode a Marc Salvisbergowned Honda Hurricane that was fitted with Dunlop K591 tires. Turkington's Team Hammer/Emgosponsored Suzuki was clad in SOMOMA, CA, ocr. 2 With Scott Russell already on the sid elines wi th a broken kn ee he suffered in the previous da y's end urance race and David Sadowski crashing in fro nt of him, Texan Doug Polen wrapped up th e 750cc Supersports Championship at Sears Point International Raceway despite not fin ishing th e 12-lap race. Instead, it was Calvin Ra yborn III taking home th e victory . . Polen p ulled off while leadi ng Ra yborn on lap four, one lap af ter Sadowski threw away h is championshi p c ha nces i n th e Carousel. Although it was a nnou nced th at Po len had pulled in to save himself for th e Superbike Na tional, Rayborn cl aim s th e ex h au st pipe o n th e Texa n 's Su zuk i was broken . "T he 750 worked bitch in'," Ra yborn said after th e win. " H is (Po len's) pipe broke right in front of me. H e's telli ng everyo ne he just pulled in ." Wh en asked about it, Pol en said, " No com ment." Wh en .the flag dropped for th e fin al , Donal d J acks n abbed the holeshot, foll o wed by Sadow sk i. Pol en was seven th up the hill. The fir st to exit the class was Peter Carroll, cras hi n g h is Suzuki in th e Carousel. Sadowski led across th e stripe a t the end of th e first lap with Ra yborn and Polen in pursuit. At th e end of lap two it was Polen on Sadowski and applying lots of pressure. On the third lap, Sadowski crashed. " I kept seeing 'p lus zero ' on my p it board," Sadowski said. " I tried making up ground. That's (the Carousel) where I could hear his motor th e most, so I tried to go a li ttle fast er th ere. I guess I hit the wrong bumps, " With Sadowski out of the running, Polen led one more lap before pulling in. Rayborn took over and started putting space between himself and Jacks. Third place was held comfortably by Chris Crew until the eighth of 12 laps when Scott Cavness got past, Cavness, however , crashed a lap later in turn three. Ra yborn took the easy win, almost four seconds ahead of Jacks. Crew finished th ird with Jim Jepsen and Ricky Orlando rounding out th e top five finishers: " It 's about time something went right," Ra yborn said. • Results 750cc ss. 1.
