Chris Agajanian presents f-i a Gates Open 5 :30 pm Time Trials 6 pm 1988 American Motorcycle Grand Prix A Cycle News Product First Race 8 pm There is no doubt th at the entry of the Americans raised FIM Grand Prix racing to a loftier level. Technology has kept pa ce with their demands until toda y, you can watch a Grand Prix road ra ce, even on television, and readily appreciate how fast th ey must be. Television tends to make motor racing look slowed down in real time, but the GP motorcycles carry enough speed and excitement to overcome tha t and, even on tape cassette, still take your brea th away. The new video cassette tape or VT, as we in the trade call it, is produced by Videovision in English and is available from Cycle News Prod ucts' new Cycle Action Theater, for $49.95. The picture begins with the usual seagull, seals and sailboats views of Monterey, California, th e setting of the recent Un ited States Motorcycle Grand Prix, and soon zeroes in on Laguna Seca Raceway for the newest races on th e Grand Prix cir cuit. T old from the European point of view, by knowledgeabl e en th usias ts, th e 60 minute production is different, and in some ways better, than th e version that was shown here lately o n NBC. All th e exci ting action is followed, lap by lap, from timed practice, through the exciting 250cc GP, to the climactic 500cc Grand Finale. Since this version was broadcast in Europe, the narrator has to comment on the poverty of the paddocks, compared to what his viewers are used to seeing, and the camera does no t li nger lo ng in the pits. I would have li ked to see more closeups of the beau tiful, handmade motorcycles under the fiberglass, but I guess that is what still pictures are for. Sometimes I wish the cameras had stayed more on the winners, Jimmy Fihceand Eddie Lawson. But they caught all the good passes, and if you watch closely several times, you can trace their racing lines all around the course. You can also see what Grand Prix riders do to earn their pay, and why they ar e worth it. ~ Bass T ickets (91 6) 395·BASS o r Howe Ave. Box Of f ice (91 6) 920· 1 1 21 ..0 E CAL EXPO - Honda at speedS of Har,eYvs c 145 MPH aNt ' )I!&T.;.~ Ha!iey DIVlQson Deal AssociallOn ers Johnny Airtime -w m N ot Appear .... v oI.lIrtIlImC~'omi.
