DAVID GA UTHIER Enc ino, CA Number One I was reall y bummed to read th at Bubba Shobert had " los t" a t Syracuse because o f his bike being under th e minimum weight. My wife and I moved 10 Orlando, Florida, two years ago, but flew home for th e Syra cus e Mi le. We wer e th ere a nd sa w th e whole thin g. We were' lucky enough to secure pit passes from so me friends, so we really got a clos e view of the action. As soon as Bubba go t to his pit after the rac e, you co uld see he was upset. We heard him tell one of his people, "T he y say I'm underw eight. " But instead of being o ut o f contro l, as yo u might expect from most peop le, Bubba kept hi s ca lm. We took a chance a nd asked for an a u togra p h (my wife had hi s Cam el Pro tow el to sig n ). Not onl y did he sign th e tow el, but he a lso po sed for a pi cture with us, a ll thi s time kn owing hi s bike was impounded and hi s win was in jeopardy. My wife a nd I have seen Bubba . race at Syra cus e severa l times. We have also seen him work at Poco no , Ha m b u rg and Daytona. This guy is a true champion. He a lways has time for th e fan s, and remains a gentleman no matter what his situation. H e ma y have "lost" Syracuse this year, b ut his behavior proves he is a winner no matter wha t the outcome. We all know Bu bba is in a dogfight for the Grand National Championship crown, but even if he should lose (heaven forbid), his atti tude towards the sport a nd it 's fans will keep him Number One for a lo ng time to come. RICK & NANCY WALKER Orlando, FL Not this larry either I mus t agr ee with Larry Naston (Voices, September 28 issue) - the a n nou ncer a t an event is the 'lin k between the racing and the fans . On the day of the Was ho ugal MX, this Larry was in Japan narrating a film for Suzuki. Thank you for setting the record stra ig h t. LARRY E. HUFFMAN San Clemente, CA N aston and Huffman 's letters are in resp onse to a ' lett er (Voices, Septemb er 21 issue) from John Dix on of Seattle International Ra ceway. . Dixon referred to announcer Larry Mai ers as " L arry What's H is Nam e" and said Maiers "was unable to curb Bob Hannah 's mouth." Dixon accused Hannah of cursing over the public address system . Hannah has con tacted us and Dixon and a letter from Hannah, in which he ex p lains w hat really did happen at Washou· . gal, is on th e way to us .. . Editor. Dream come true I' ve just returned from the trip of my lifetime - th e ISDE in Mende, France. Since I was young, I've a lways wanted to be a member of th e U.S. team at th e Six Days . This year that dr eam came true. Another dream came true wh en I finis hed th e event and won a gold medal. I'm proud a nd very happy to have been part of th is trul y world-class event. T his couldn 't have been possible witho ut the help of man y fin e people and sponsors who really su p po rt thi s grea t sport. First, I want to th ank th e people at Larson's Cycl e in Ca m bridge, Minnesota, wh o have done so much to support the sport and me through the years. This year, on top o f everything e lse, th ey provided me with a new Honda CR250 before th e even t. After almost 900 mi les and six days , I wo uldn't hesit ate 10 do it again with th at bike! Part of my Honda's success is du e to a PSI performance exha ust pipe - which lasted through 900 mi les of roc ks without a dent a nd produced fantasti c power. An other sponsor I wish to thank is Ma lcolm Smith Racing Produ cts. Also, a big thanks to Smith Goggles. Thanks to th e people wh o literall y .m ad e it possibl e, Barb and Joe Boisvert who threw a fund -rai sing party o n m y behalf a nd donated over $500. . . AMA District 23 also really ca me through with he lp. We are not a large district but the support I received was trem endous.
