McGrath strong at
PerrisMX
By Mary Partelow
PERRIS, CA, AUG. 13
" Wh o is that guy?" said ATK pilol Will y
Musgrave. af ta th e co mp leti o n of mot o on e
in the Pr o class a t Perris Ra cewa y. Musgrave
was refeiring to Jerem y McG rath, the 16-yearo ld Yamaha YZ250 rider wh o pressured him
throughoUl the race, a nd ended u p taking the
overall victory.
But Mu sgrav e was not the o nly o bstacle tha t
McGrath had to overcome th at day. fn betwee n
molOS, McG rath discovered tha t hi s fra me had
broken in half o n the right side of th e sea t
tu be.
"wi just zip- tied it logether and hoped for
th e best," said McGrath.
. .
At the sta rt of moto two , it was McGrath
ta king th e holeshot with Honda-mounted
.Steve Shippy and Suzuki riding Eddie Arnel
close behind. Musgrave had hi s work cut out
for him as he ran up to third, displacing Arnet,
who slid out in a comer. Musgrave continued
his charge, but ShiPr.y had other ideas in
m ind. Shippy success ully kept Musgrave at
his back until the pressure forced him to give
in and he went off the side of th e track,
a llo wing Musgrave 10 get by. Musgrave began
to close in on McGrath, but ran out of time.
Arnet also took advantage of Sh ippy's m ishap
and finished third
In th e Vet Expert clas s, Honda-mounted
Gary Jones grabbed the holeshot in th e first
o u ting. Jones looked back and checked the
o the r riders' progress, en suring that he had
secured a lead. Kawasaki-mounted Gregory
Berg was running second midway through the
moto, holding off Tom White's advances.
White looked like he would be the secondplace rid er until he dumped it in a hairpin
corn er, White said, " It was one of those tim es
that I had a good finish within sight and then
I go a nd do someth ing stu p id."
Towards the end of the mot o, Berg made
a cou p le of cos tly m istak es, wh ich made it
possible for J .S. Hanson to nip seco nd pl ace
JUst befo re the fini sh .
Although it was Jones wh o again capt ured
the star t in mot o two. Alan Ol son proved what
a little suspension tun ing can do . Ol son never
pressured J ones bu t rod e strong enough to
place second, cli nching second overaII in the
process. Whi te ha d better luck in the seco nd
ro und and finis hed third, but his fifl h place
in rnoto o ne put hi m back to fifth overall whe n
the points were tallied. Hanson's fourth place
second moto finis h was enough to secu re th ird
overall.
