Burgett has only raced twice this season , but showed all on hand that he can still turn it on by win n in g both Vet P ro class motos aboard h is Kawasaki. R iders from a five-state radius, w h ich included O rego n , Washingto n, Idaho, California and Montana and also severa l Ca nadian pro vinces, cam e to do battle on what was, according to promoter Ra lph H u ffman , " Bas icall y the same course that th e Professional riders would use the following day." Washington 's Brett DeVries, riding a Honda, won th e 3 l-rider 125cc Interm edia te class to join Bu rgett , Ca lifornia n Craig Davis, winner of the Open Pro class , and 25 other overall winners in the winner's circle at the co m p letion of the day of amateur racing. Burgett, most lik ely the holder o f th e m o s t wins recorded here a t Wash ougal , proved that h e's sti ll pl enty fas t as th e fo rmer Team Yamaha rid er , now 'rid ing a Kawa saki, a nd sponsored by AXO Sports, landed h oleshot laurel s in th e first Vet Pro moto, wh ich ra n co m bined with the U p The Hill cla ss, making for some in credib le racing action. T ed DeVo l rode in Burgett's sha dow after displacing H onda rider Tom Row land and Canadian J ari H einonen. DeVo l trailed in for a seco nd in the Vet Pro class behi nd Burgett and a h ea d of H einonen. H einonen pi cked up th e win in the Up The Hill class followed by Vet Pro s Rowland, Mitch Kirkpatrick a nd Ga ry Wozen . Burgett did a sim ila r di sappearing act in th e seco nd co ntest a nd came a wa y w it h the to p cas h pa yoff as well as the p laudits from th e ga llery of spectato rs estima ted a t 2000. Second in th e Vet Pro clas s went to Rowland a fter his second moto seco nd-p lace finish while DeVol's 2-3 rid es netted third. In the Up The Hill class it was Heinonen p ickin g up the overall wi n on th e Fox Racin g Ya maha after II w ins over H onda riders Sco t Bergr en and Mik e Kates. Several classes were of over flow capacity , in cl ud i n g the l 25cc Beg inner class with 61 entries, an d were sp lit into two div isio ns . Division one saw Cal gar y, Albert a 's Todd Sla rcha k, ridi ng a Honda , ta ke th e moto win in th e first ro u nd o f competition a head o f Eric Irvine, Tim Gates, Mark Koehn a n d fifth pl ace finishe r Mark Miller. Mo to two had Irvine contro ll ing th e tempo, good for a mo to wi n a nd the overall for his efforts, taking to p brass home to Manhattan, Mo ntana, a fter 2-i rides. Seco nd o vera ll went the way o f Slarchak (1-3) while G a tes claimed third a fter 3-2 showi ngs. Division tw o wen t to H ondamounted Mark Nitsch , winner of both motos. Second to Nitsch wa s Shane Wh itak er, riding a Kawasaki with 2-3 sh owings whi le h ometown hero Rusty Garman nett ed a third after h is co nsistan t 4-4 showings. Roundin g o ut the top five overall fin ishers were Ma tt Sisson (7-6) an d Ch ris H o udek, fift h via 6-7 posti ngs. O ne of th e day's most exci ti ng races were the two 125cc Pro-Ami Intermediate class contests, gating 29 riders. The firs t moto saw lo ne ProAm rider Brian Thomson, jump into th e lead o n h is Ya maha followed by Bri an G ipson , DeV r ies, Dan n y Ulven , T revor Meagher a nd Monty Spalding. Thomson h ad an easy ti me up fro nt, "opening u p a huge lead wh ile DeVn es, ridi ng th e P ro Circ u itl P J IIGearl DeVo l En g .sponsored Honda , ove rtook Gipson for th e nu mb er two spot, which wa s actually th e lead in the Intermedia te portion. DeVries made up a n in credible amount o f grou nd o n leader T hom so n , an d with two laps to go had n arrowed th e gap to two secon ds. The last lap was disaster for Thomso n, when he smas hed hi s p ipe a nd lost power, a llowing DeVries to nab th e win. Followin g Thomson across th e fini sh line were Spalding, who mounted a la te cha rge, Meagher: U lve n , J a son Nort on a n d T y Birdwell. Devries' l -I demolition came a fter a thrashing of th e competition in th e second moto, which was shortened due to the length o f the p ro gram . DeVries used the shortened m o to to his advantage, breezing to a win a h ea d of Birdwell , Spalding , Meagher a nd Andy Grinder. The overalls read DeVri es (I- I), Spalding (2-3) a nd Meagher (3-4). Ri chard Merrit rode h is H onda to a n ove ra ll wi n in th e Open Inter mediate class, but hi s im p ressive performances were o versha dowed by the presen ce o f Pro class rider Davis. Davis logged sensa tiona l wins in both rnotos, and his co mpetitio n came fro m Merri t, who ran second in the early stages of moto o ne, and Ken Peterso n , the on ly o ther P ro rider to finis h af ter loca ls ' Monty Mitch ell a nd Kei th Foidel dropped out. Davis dazzled th e specta tors with ,h is skyshot antics enroute to a moto o ne win ove r Peterson, Tony DeVries, Merri tt , Don Boespflug and Kevin Dela p . Mot a two was also th e Davis show as he went wire-to-wire to fina lize his I-I swee p. Second wen t to Peterso n (2.-2) while Merritt pi cked up a win in th e Intermediate portion after a moto two wi n in th e class. DeVri es
