ADRA aids forest
service in Prescott
National Forest
By Michael Ross
PRES COTT, AZ, AUG. 13-14
Sixty-six members of the Arizona
Desert Racing Association met in the
Prescott National Forest to volunteer
their labor to build silt retention
structures for the Arizona Forestry
Service.
, In 1979 a youth work organization
dammed up rain water run-off in the
Camp. Wood area of the Prescott
Fores t 10 create a pond, but instead
the dam had a far more beneficial
result:
Area Forest Rangers rea lized that
the dam slowed the run-off which
made the silt-laden, rain water drop
the ferti le soil out of suspension. The
result was a green belt that extended
for over half a mile up stream and
a quarter mile down stream which
was dubbed the Emerald Glade.
ADRA president Ph il Auernheimer volunteered his group to build
one or two more of these silt retention structures in the Camp Wood
area where Auernheimer normally
holds his Prescott Mountain Desert
Race.
