It wasn 't settled as to who had the hol eshot un til the duo reached th e rock ers after turn two. It was here . th at Douglas took com mand. H e became the clear leader and never look ed ba ck. H armel finished second and Gary Fargo go t third. The fina l rnoto for Douglas was the seco nd mo w of th e 250cc Pro class. In th is one it was H armel who too k the early lead for the first three laps. just after the halfway point Dou glas picked up the pace and flew past H armel to take the lead. Edge 34 ANCH O RA G E, AK, AU G. 14 Northwest Glass-sponsor ed Bruce Stingley took his H onda to overall wins in both the Pro a nd 500cc Expert classes at Kin ca id Park. The race was pan of th e Ala ska MOlOrcycle R ac ing Association's 1988 Championship Motocross Series. Pro class series leader Ralph Blanchard a nd 500cc Expert series ' leader j im McCl ain both took back seats to th e "Stingley Express." Kawasaki · o f Anchorage teammates Blanchard and McClain both had bad starts in th e first Pro mow bu t Stingley didn' t wa it for them. Stingl ey stretched out his lead and n ever looked back. ' Blanchard worked hi s way up to seco nd a t th e finish while McClain dropped out due to technical problems. The second rnoto wa s a no the r Stingley holeshot but on lap two Suzuki-Artie Cat Motosports-backed jason Anderson passed to tak e the lead and the win. Stingley finish ed seco nd and first overall. VALLEY CITY, UT, AUG. 7 Col orado rivals j ohn H opperstad a nd Geoff Cesm at ventured west lo U tah for th e Utah Sport Bike Asso cia tio n 's fourth round of the Bon nevi lle Sprint Seri es, and staged a furious gunfight for th e 750cc and Open Superbike victories. Bo th Hopperstad a n d Cesmat broke H op perstad 's old Bonneville Raceway la p record o f 1:05.42, but H o p pe rstad did so first using Metzeler Comp K tires. Consequently, he . went ho me with th e one- time $500 cash bonus from Metzeler Tires fo r his 750 Superbike effort. The new record o nly lasted for a few minutes; In the O pen Superbike race immediately afterward, both H opperstad and Cesmat bro ke the new record. The 750 Superbike was a showca se for the engine -building and riding skills of Geoff Cesmat, H is Boulder Mo torsports GSXR750 put motor on everybody . H e go t a good holeshot o ff th e line, and just simp ly wen t away. H e led every la p fo r the win and j ohn H op perstad took seco nd and $300 fro m Yamaha. O pen Superb ike saw the new lap record shattered by bo th H opperstad and Cesrnat. KBER radio rider Laird White go t th e h oleshot o n h is GSXRllOO Production bik e, but Cesmat passed him a t th e end of th e quarter-mile stra igh t going a good 15 miles a n hour faster on his 750 Superbike. White was second into tum one, but H opperstad rode his FZRlOOO into second place on the wa y into turn two. Greg Ni chols a nd . Chris Gardner rounded out th e top five a t th e end of lap one. H opperstad soon pulled within striking distance of Cesmat, and passed him on lap four. That turned the ra ce into a Hopperstad-Cesmat grudge match but blew the new lap record apart. Cesmat was' unoffically timed in th e 1:03.90's, but offi cial timekeepers credited him with a new record of 1:04.16. Allen fro m capturing th e overall vic to ry in the Mini class at the T ennessee Sta te Ch ampionshi p Series, the eighth ro und of the seri es, at Boyd 's Creek Motocross. In th e fir st mo to, Alle n mastered the ho lesh ot a nd ran away with the rno to victory - unchalle nged. Tod Huffsettler settled into second by the finish , whi le Bryan Gilliam recovered fro m a spill to 'take thi rd. All en was , once again, Spotted in the front of the pack a t th e start of th e second moto, but th e chain on hi s Kaw asaki came flying o ff it s sp roc kets, wh il e Gilliam shot by and into th e lead. All en quickly put the chain ba ck on and went in pursuit of lead er Gillia m. _ But by the time th e checkered flag came out, Gilliam was still out in front with All en in second. However, Allen 's 1-2 combination outmatched Gilliam's 3-1 for the overall victory. The 125cc class kept everyone on its feet. Mitch McCarter jumped into the early lead but lost a bunch of positions a nd laps wh en he had an enco u nter with a hay bal e. Yamahamounted Marty Dyke took over the lead but was kept o n h is toes by Ma rk Ammors. Ammor s tri ed to pass Dyke aga in a nd again for th e lead but failed in his attem p ts. Dyke eventua lly pulled away for the wi n. Chad Pitt finish ed third a head o f Jamie H ackney. Mot o two was a nother close battle with Dyke ta king the early lead fo llo wed by Ammon, H ackney and McCarter. Soo n after, McCarter moved into th ird but hi t a hol e in a berm and crashed ou t o f co ntention. Dyke, Ammon, a nd Hackney continued to dic e down to the fin ish. Ste ve Lucero led it a ll th e way to win the third sem i wit h Schwartz edging a stubbo rn j im Sisemore in th e fin al semi to ro und o u t the main event field. Lucero , trying to use the dirt on th e outside , looked wide as th ey came o ff th e seco nd bend, but Sch wartz pinch ed him to the backch u te wa ll an d forced Lucero to back off on lap one. Lucero quickl y came back on th e throttle bu t he had lost valuable ground to th e leader. Lucero was within strik in g distance until la p three when Schwartz expanded his adva ntage to five len g th s. He carri ed that margin a ll the way to th e finish of the event. Lucero stayed in seco n d with H amill and H ancock rounding out th e field. The second place finishers from each sem i came back to co ntest the consolation even t.
