Robinson rode his Sierra/Belli A&:A Ra cing/Smith/Burba powered Weslake to victory after taking th e lead in tum one using a great start from his pole position. Following closely was Robert Curry and Dave Faria. Curry and Faria were locked into a wheel-to-wheel battle through the first two laps, allowing Robinson the breathing room he needed. As Robinson inched ahead Curry kept Faria at bay until Faria lost traction in some marbles and slipped behind Mike' Solis. Faria fought his way back to th ird as Curry chased Robinson. At the finish it was Robinson wi th his first win, Curry second, ' Faria third and Solis fourth. Michael Kain cranked up hi s Body Works Etc.-sponsored machine and never looked back while leading the six-lap Handicap main. With Kain leading, the others were working hard to get themselves sorted out. Rich Marcucci moved past the falteri ng Steve Orlandi for second to chase after Kain as Charlie Venegas held down th e th ird spot. Venegas and Marcucci traded positions as the white flag came out and Steve Martin closed in . On the last lap it was all Kain's as Marcucci edged out Venegas for the runner-up spot. In th e Division Two main Dave Worthen took the ear ly lead and held off a la te charge by Jeff Ochoa for the win. Herndon did the same in the combined Modified Class ' One and Two with an easy victory. He also led the Modified Class Four and Five feature, but Herndon really had to work for this one as Mark Foster, on his Yamaha FZ750, gave him all he could handle. . Herndon added to his trophy collection in the GP Two feature aboard his l2-year-old Honda 550, but not without a fight from beginning to end from Novice Steven Shaffer aboard his well-modified and fast Honda 423cc twin. In the combined GP Four and GP Five feature , Novice Nathan Donohen put on a show as he led from beginning to end on his Class Four Yamaha 750, beating the Experts and larger machinery. Spdwy By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, AUG. 12 For the 10th time this seaso n , Bobby Schwartz steered th e Budw eiser/CTI Bra ce /K&:N / KN AC /R us s e II 's Grandstands-ba ck ed Weslak e to victory in th e Scratch main at the Orange County Fairgrounds, It took three tries to ge t Friday's Scratch ma in underw ay. On the first attem p t, Sam Ermol enko - off the inside - and Schwartz were even out of the gate. But Ermolenko tapped the former National Champion and knocked him down in turn on e. Alan Christian, another former National Champion, laid it down and brought out the first red flag. On th e second try, Dubb Ferrell went down in turn three and the red came out again. . Half of the field down on the first lap' mandates a co mp lete restart. Referee Irwin Moon ruled that Ferrell went down all on his own and kicked him out, much to the chagrin of the fans. The fans booed while Ferrell pleaded his case, but Moon would not hear the protest until Christian came forward and said that he had caused Ferrell to crash. With that; Moon changed his mind and all four riders returned to the tapes. This time, Schwartz. coming from gate two, beat Ermolenko off the line and when they hit the first turn hepulled it down in front of Ermolenko. Ferrell and Christian also flew past Ermolenko before the end of the opening revolution. Ferrell was all over Schwartz. He continually tried to find a lane on the inside. Ermolenko seemed to throw in th e towel on lap three and he cruised the remainder of the way. Ferrell kept the heat on and was one length behind Schwartz when Jerry King threw the checkered flag. Christian took third. Andy Northrup took the Handicap main at Costa Mesa, Jessee Finch set the tempo for the first two laps before Northrup flew through on the inside. Once Northrup got by, he ran away for the win. Second went to Tuff McBride with Steve Lucero, coming down the back , third. Resu lts SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Schwartz (Was); 2. Dubb Farrell (Was); 3.
