That grow ing up was so fu ll of pa in, andnoui I was hearing that Old Song agam. I was trying to remember what it was like, rid in g aw ay on a 500 T riu m ph: Lea ving the wild life and going for th e hard stuff - swapping independence for that stony oath of college. Giv ing up bik e wrenc hing for text books. Trad ing th e wind for wee kends of L iterature. A n d fo r H istory and Science and the way th e world runs. Ex changing my favorite back roads for th ose dreaded semester exams. Motorcycle R 's for gradepoint A 's. (Or, more often, those traumatic C's .) I was trying to remember what it was like because - because now it was happening all over AGAIN! Not to me , No! I'm still out there each ride day, in helmet and leathers, from dawn to as long as I can . And writing the rest of the time. No, this roun d it's happening to our son! Un believably! .To the litt le guy uiho just last Sunday (so it seemsl} sat so small . and snug behind me, hugging my waist! And already! Go ing off to the Big University! Goi ng to 'Cal at Berkeley! And I'm re-liv ing every bittersweet m ile of it, from our own front door to his h igh- rise do rm. My budd y was tradin g old times for new, jus t like I .did, w ith m y own dad. No more week end runs toge ther to the races and back. N o m ore rides over sh ivering mountain passes or chas in g fog-laced coastlines. No m ore bacon iT-eggs and biscuits-ir-grairy, those breakfasts at counters in towns with no stoplights. No more, no, not for a while. But Bryan w ill be back. Sam e as I - coming home to the ride 'cause it flows in th e veins. But, hey! Doesn 't : colleg e S cien ce h elp to explain it? H istory to put it in our time f rame? Philosophy and Art to make it m ore than before? It's that motorcycling rides a m ystery road th rou gh our psyche - and -t h e emotion it creates is [oreoer on th e move. For m y dad, and for m e, and for those who come after . Just what's it all about, do you suppose? Maybe someday we m ig ht know - but only if we stay sharp and ride safe" and hang in th ere as long as we're abl e. And what we ever do in sc hool Yeah! - is a lunch stop along the way.
