'Fowler runs away with last Riverside GP By Ken Faught Photos by Jimmie O'Dell MORENO VALLEY, CA, AUG. 13 " I ju st ran m y own race," said Terry Fowler after d early dominating both motos to win Class 22 and the overall in the 16th an d final runnin g of the SCORE Off-Road Wod el Championships at Riverside International Raceway. "I h Ii I d n t e rrst moto . passe the leader early on the first lap. 16 Same thing in the second moto against Larry Roeseler. I hav e a little advantage over him because I used to race motocross, and this co urse is so mewhat like a mot ocross course, just a little smoother. T he o n ly sectio ns that were a lit tle tricky were th e asp ha lt stre tches." The o ne-and-a -half mile track was cl?mpletely man-made with plenty of high and low speed whoop-d~-doos, along with many spectacular Jumps. The course was designed to simulate terrain in Baja, combining the best of both hard-pack dirt and mud holes mixed in with a portion of pavement. In an effort to co nserve time and . to make a more interesting race, all five motorcycle cla sses were run a t o nce with the ri ders on the same line. At th e start of the firs t mo to Class 22 (Over 251cc) rider Bo b Ru ssell hol esh ot Fowler (Class 22), Class 2 1's (i26-250cc) Roger Hurd, Roeseler (Class 22) and Class 20's (125cc) Todd Campbell. On the first lap Fowler quickly shot into the lead with Campell moving into second over Hurd and Roeseler as Russell dropped to fifth. Pro-Circui t Racing/ AXO/Scott/ Arai-sponsored Fow ler soon opened up an eight-second lead as Roeseler tried to fight his way around Hurd for third. As Roeseler and Hurd came around at the end of th e third lap, Roesel er held a small lead over th e Kawasaki rider and managed to s h a ke off Hurd as h e c h ase d Campbell. At the halfway point Yamaha/S&S Engineering/Scott/ Answer/Graydon /Tsubaki /Spon Track Co.! Downhill Race Spec. z Uni-Filtersponsored Mike Sixbery worked his way into fifth overall and first p lace in Class 30 (Over 30 years o ld) . Sixbery won Class 21 in 1983. Back up front Fowler continued to pull away from both Campbell and R oeselcr . With three laps remaining, Campbell managed to gain a little breathing room as Roeseler stalled his Kawasaki before a triple jump. Kawasaki/Malcolm Smith/CEET/ N G KlDunloplTrick Racing Gasoline/RenthallAcerbissponsored Roeseler quickly got restarted without losing a position. With two la ps to go Fowler's hopes of a win almost came to an end as a lapped ri der cha nged li nes in fro nt . of him, causing the pair to tangle. Neither rider went down, but Fow ler lost time and energy while making the save. Fowler cruised for the remainder of the race and took the checkers over 15 seconds ahead of Campbell, Roeseler, Sixbery and Hurd. At the start of the second moto Roeseler led Fowler, Campbell, Russell, Sixbery, Hurd and John Whitaker around the first turn and down the asphalt straightaway. Fowler again immediately worked his way into the lead and began to pull away. Campbell, too, quickly passed Roeseler, but couldn't seem to put any distance on the desert ace. On th e second lap Sixbery dropped out of the top five, which allowed Hurd fifth ahea d of Whitaker. However, Sixbery main tained th e Class 30 lead over Ken Ehl ers. Lap three aga in saw a cha nge in the top five as Russell went down hard, surrendering fifth to Whitaker. Russell slowly remounted near the back of the pack and was never again a factor. Back up front Fowler opened up a sizab le lead with Roeseler challcnging Campbell for second. Whether or no t Roeseler worked h is way around Campbell had no bearing on their places, considering that the two riders were racing in separate classes. However, Roeseler and Campbell continued to bang bars with the ProCycle /Z-Racing/Duralube/ Acerbis/ AXO Sport-sponsored Campbell continuously maintaining his advantage except for a short stint on lap six. As the end drew near, Kawell began to pick up his pace and started pressuring Sixbery for the final topfive place. The duo banged bars for several turns wi th Sixbery holdi ng on to his position. With only two laps remaining Kawell put his Pomona Valley Kawasaki/Maxima Lubricants/Dave Miller Conceptsbacked Kawasaki into the fifth overall spot and second Class 21. Campbell, the Class 21 leader, was almost 45 seconds ahead. . As Fowler greeted the checkers in the final motorcycle event to be held at R iverside, the battle for second was yet to be decided. Roeseler and Ca mpbell went a t it to the finish, with Campbell holdin~ the advantage. H urd finish ed third ahead of Kawell, Sixbery a nd Dia to ni . Fowler's second-mote win also scored him the overall victory in Class 22 ahead of Roeseler, Donatoni, Whitaker and Ken' Rieger. Campbell wra pped the Class 20 title by topping Kawell, Itson, Grant , Steele and Ted Brobeck, while Sixbery beat out Ehlers, Jonas Par Gaaf and Mark Granberg for the honors in Class 30.
