ISDE (Continued from page 29) " I went ~ith KUrt to th e ISDE in Italy an d saw what it wa s'all about," said Aaron. " It looked like run, so ever since.Tve wa nted to ride th e Six Days." Many peop le quest ioned Aa ron being named to th e U.S. Jr. World team last year for the Polish ISDE, mainly because o r h is lack o r ISD E experien ce, a nd a lso for swi tch ing to a 125cc Cagiva for th e Six Days a fter . riding a Honda CRI25 in th e Qualifiers. Bu t Aaron shocked everyo ne by claiming a gold medal in h is first • try , and everyone ad m its th at th e Polish ISDE was a tough event only five Am ericans ea rned gol d medals. . . " It's a privilege to ride th e Six Days," said Hough. " After qualifying, I feel I can beat anybody. My goal is to beat Malcolm Smith's gold medal record." Fred Hoess Age: 22 Home: Stanhope, New Jersey Marital status: Single ISDE events ridden: 4 ISDE record: 3 gold, I DNF Class/M.e.: 250cclKawasaki KX250 Sponsors: Scott USA, O'Neal USA, Arai , Tsubaki, Metzeler Fred Hoess is probably the most und errated enduro rider i n th e cou n try. Although he mostly rides hare scram b les, he usually fin ishes in th e top 10 in National enduros, but his specialty is the ISDE . He's made hi s reputation as being ustopab le a n d relia ble in ISDE competition. Other riders seem to get more attention th an Hoes's, but wh en th e results ar e posted , h e' s a lways righ t th ere with th e best o f th em . In four Six Da ys, Hoess has ea rned three go ld medals and suffered one DNF due to m echanical failure. As long as his bike is runn ing H oess will ma ke it to th e finish, and he proved that by starting the Spanish Six Days in 1986 with a broken Ioot, It didn't slow him down one bit he earned a gold medal. In Po la n d he banged up his knee but still earned a gold. . In J u ne of 1988, Fritz Kadl ec, Dave Bertram and H oess rode the In ter national Four Day Enduro in Australia, wh ich proved to be to ugher than ma n y recent Six Days. Of th e th ree Americans, onl y H oess fin ished, des p ite ri di ng th e last day and a h a lf with h is Kaw asaki's trans m issio n st uc k in th ird gear. However , H oes s broke hi s ankle at th e fir st U.S. ISDE Qualifier in Michi gan and didn 't ride ei the r th e Ida h o or Oregon even ts, but his past reco rd al one ea rn ed him th e right to make the J r. World team. . " I th ink the Six Days is the best ; I love th e tough competition, th e E u r o pea ns , and yo u g et to see different parts or the world that you would never see as a tourist," said Hoess. " I just hope it's tough in France, th en we'll have a good chance of winning." Come ride with us. " I'm more in tune to th e slow, roc ky, slic k and orr-camber terrain. I'm easy on m y eq u ip m en t and I know how to keep m y bike running for the entire six da ys, as lo ng as the problem isn't anything too major." Hawkins feels optimistic about th e J r. World team 's cha nces. " I think we have a very good cha nce of winning, but our on ly problem is that too many of us ar e in th e same class. Say if I have a good specia l test score, then I'm hurting Kurt's and Fred's score as well. If we were in different classes, we wouldn' t be hurting ourselves at alL Bu t : ov erall, we have a better chance of winning than th e Trophy team has.
