When wou ld you pay $99 .for a piece of paper? Eric Geboers took second overall via a 4-1 tally. The Belgian has a comfortable points lead over Kurt Nicoll. 312-252. ad van tage of th e tabletop jump to get Vimond by turning tight in th e tum before and using rebound to clear it. That win has been a lo ng time coming, bu t it was worth waiting for; I reall y enjoyed it. " " Billy made one mistake, that was all, and I thought I was go ing to pass him but he recovered well and forced me off th e line when I chose th e wrong line to pass ," Vimond said. I was lucky Leisk didn 't pass me." " I made a good start, but I let myself ~et pushed out onto the loose stones In tum two and it took a couple of laps to ge t back the places I lost," said Leisk, " Every time I tried to pass Vimond I had to go off line and ended up losing ground. I knew that I would have to set tle for th ird unl ess Bill y or J ack y ' made a mistake." Mark Banks and Van der Ven were set to com plete the first six until misfortune struck on th e las t two laps. With th e two-la p board in sight, Banks had the heartbreak of having hi s chai n jum p off, the third tim e th is year th at he had lost a topsix placing in th e fin al two laps. " With those 38 points I would be fifth in th e cham pions hi p," Banks said. " It is so frustrating. " For Van der Ven it was a fla t rear tire on the final lap which dropped him to 12th after he had battled h is way th rough th e pack in efficient style. . It was again Geboers wh aled away in moto two , but DeCarli pushed him back to secon d on th e firs t lap. DeCarli 's lack of stami na hit even earl ier this tim e and by half distan ce he was back in the p its after almost dropping o ut of the poi nts. As a th ird of th e pa ck went down in two separate incidents in th e first two turns, o nly o ne ot her rider got close to Geboers. Leisk, Geboers team mate for th e day since he was riding the injured Thorpe's bik e, passed th e Belgian with a desperate but well thought out mo ve through the first two turns of lap five. Within a lap th e two Hondas had passed DeCarli and then Leisk was demoted to th e back of the pack. . " My chain flew off at th e same place as Banks' in race one," said Lei sk. " I got it back on, but later I got a rear flat. , I had no chance of points and I didn 't want to risk getting hurt so I pulled off. " That left Geboers on his own as Nicoll demoted the fading DeCarli and Jared Sm ith to take second. Nicoll closed the gap on the lead er but Geboers had got too far clear in the first half of th e race for Nicoll to be a threa t, H owever, the question was wh o wo uld win overa ll. O f the first race lead ers Leis k was gone and for a lon g time Geboers led th e overall as Liles a nd Vim ond battled through fro m awful starts. Liles was always mak ing th e best headway, but Vim on d's chances went away completely with a cras h after 20 minutes in which he wrenched h is troublesome right shoulder. Li les was not going to let th e GP escape hi s grasp and with 10 minu tes to go he wres ted third fro m Smith to ensu re th e overall honors. Van der Ven saw a change of luck follow ing a week of di sasters in whic h h is camper was burnt o ut to fin ish fifth ah ead of Banks, who settled for sixth after ge tti ng into trouble tryin g to pass Van der Ven a nd seeing Li les storm past o n hi s victo ry mar ch. • Results . 1.
