Schwartz strongest at IMS Speedway By Scott Daloisio 34 SAN BERNARDINO, CA, J ULY 13 Bobby Schwartz mad e a long trek to win th e Scra tch main Wednesday nigh t a t John La Douceur's Inl and Motor Speedway. On Tuesday night, the veteran rid er com peted in th e Overseas Final a t Conventry, Engla nd. When that even t ended, he raced to a pl ane and made the long journ ey to southern California. H e arr ived a t IMS only minutes before the opening event of the night. Sch waru had to bring the Bud- weiser/C.T.!. Br ace/ STP / Q u icksilver/Toys for Pops/ Oakley Wesla ke from gate four on the start. T hat failed to hinder his performance. The 31-year-old blazed a trai l into th e first bend ahead of hi s three co mperi tor s. Steve Lucero almost got into the tapes before the start a nd as he rolled back out of them , th e gate went up. Incredibly, Lucero still go t off th e lin e in second. Bart Bast was another rid er who had early probl ems. He went wide in turn two and took a fast tri p to the dirt. The tra ck had a lot of traction on Wednesda y and that became a p pa rent when Schwartz and Lucero both wh eelied in turn two o n the second revolution. Lucero hook ed up on th e success ive two laps in th e sa me spot a nd wheelied each time but never fell fa r behind Schwart z. T he 1986 National Champion two-whee led it through th e final bend but he still def eated Lu cero by a co uple of seconds. Ferr ell was third. T he eigh t lap H andicap main was a s u r viva l .of th e fi ttes t. Pinkleathered Kelly Inman used his 10yard-line start ing spot to take th e early advantage over Keith Larsen a nd Greg Hancock. Larsen swep t the boards in the first bend o n his J awa a n d a l mos t rel egated Inman to second. The veteran ride th en stuck hi s front tire high in th e a ir a nd Inman had a tem porary rep rieve. It didn't last long, th o ugh, as La rsen took th e point away before the end of the o pen ing circ ui t. Bast was flying and he had Ferr ell in hi s draft. They found themselves in th ird and fourth before lap two co mmenced. Hancock had problems a nd dropped to last. " Ferrell go t by Bast on lap two a nd o ne circuit later, he pushed In ma n back to third. At th e same time, Brad Oxley, the reigni ng Na tio nal Speedway Champion, was slashing hi s way through the traffi c. Ferrell quickl y go bbled up the real esta te betw een hi mself a nd Larsen a nd was po ised 10 stea l th e lead wh en di sast er str uc k. H e was a ll o ver Larsen on lap five but whe n he arr ived in turn two on la p six, he took a soil sa mp le a nd a sig ni fica nt cu t in his pa ycheck. By th at time, La rsen' s Jawa had began to belch wh ite smoke a nd Oxley was ad vancing toward him at an alarming rate. The white ca me out a nd Oxley cu t to the outside. He rode wid e arou nd the first bend but Larsen fought him off. They were even down the back chute and through the final turn but Oxley put the rear tire of his Coors/ KL OS /Malco lm Smith /ST P / Cirello Weslake on the dirt line and ed ged the "Snakema n" to the checkered. Ott's hot at Ascot Speedway By Scott Daloisio GARDENA, CA. JULY 14 T wo months after crushing his heel in a grinding crash, " Sho wtime" Bobby Ott returned to the saddle of the potent Team Chip/STP/Cirello R acing Wesl ake and swe p t the -Scra tch side of the program at Chris Ag aj an ian ' s As cot Sout h Bay Stadium. With a " Bikin i Night" crowd of more than 4000 fans looking on, O u dominated the Scratch racing action after taking a sp ill in his Handicap heat. He won hi s heat and semi and then managed to draw the slicked off ga te three for the mai n even t. Alan " Crazy" Christian and "Dangerous" Dubb Ferell were situated to O tt's left o n th e line whi le Bobby Schwartz was next to his right elbow. The slick starting spo t failed to h inder the curly haired star as he beat Sch wartz to the first turn. Schwartz stayed wide as they raced through the o pening bend and Ott took . him wider as they came off turn two. For all intents and purposes, that won the ra ce for Ott. Ferrell , who mad e it to th e main even though hi s skid shoe ca me off during his sem i. tried 10 get under Sch wartz a t the end of the opening circu it for second but th e " Booga loo Kid " bea t h im back to turn one. Ott gave th e in side to Schwartz th e entire dis tance but he was still fast enough to ta ke a half a len gth victory . Mik e Curoso, who usuall y is wor king on Thursday eveni ngs, took . - the night off and won th e Handicap ma in. Ohio native Scotty Brown grabbed th e lead on the start two times but both those times saw the event red nagged with less than a lap down. The third time that th e event was started, Brown again tried to tak e th e lead but hi s rear tire was shot and after a brief tangle wi th Trinon Cirell o on the back ch u te , he ' dropped to th e back. Cirel lo fought off a lap orie challenge from Ra ndy Beddow and went on to set a blazing pace. Coming thro ugh the pack were Cu roso, Jim Fishback a nd Ferrell , who carved th eir way through th e traffic and camped on Bedd ow's rear tire on lap two. He held them off unti l lap three when they sandwiched him and went by at the three-eighths mark. Fishback, on a 1988 Jawa, was making the outside work and he started 10 sweep aro und Cirello just before th e halfway point but got too far sideways and ended up against the turn four boards. Ferrell went to work on Curoso but he couldn't find a lane. Cirello drifted off the pole in turn o ne on th e seventh circ u i t. Curos o ' and Ferrell tried to bu st their way inside but Cirello go t back down before any damag e was done. Curoso, riding the Cri-Helpz']"T Racing USA/Mesa Bearing/ Rivera Engineering Weslake, took matters into his own hands on the next bend. H e bulled his way past on the inside a nd led the la p and a half to the checkered. Ferrell got through for second with Brad O xley th ird. Results 1: SCRATCH : Bobby Ott (Wa s ); 2 .
