Ermolenko was not as sh arp as usual on a track which had been affected by heavy ra in and had to be content wit h second pl acings in his next two o u tings when he was beaten first by Chris Morton arid then by Tatum. Seven points made him a borderline case but he mad e another poor start in his fin al race and in a desperate effort to p ick up poin ts he cra shed into the safety fence on the th ird lap. H e was unhurt but was even more relie ved to fin d that th e seven poin ts he had al read y collec ted were eno ugh to see him through . . Schwartz, th e o nly man in th e field no t attac hed to a British League club, made a promisin g ope ning when he finished second to Tatum but burned ou t his clutch and had to work furi ou sly to fit new parts before he cam e o ut aga in two hea ts later. It did him little good. T wo second pl aces and two thirds gave him a six-point to tal a nd put him o n level par with Andy Sm ith of Belle Vue, but in th e run-off to decide the reserv e p lace for th e Inter-Continental semi-final in Sweden o n August 6, Smith led all th e wa y.
