With a 10th -place start, J ones had his work cu t o ut for him in the first 250cc B mo to as Steve Gill and -and BobWersch ey routed th eir bikes th rough th e first tum ahead of th e field . Werschey chased Gilland o n the first lap before taking the lead . Werschey a nd G illand held the top .two spots as J o nes began picking his way through the pa ck. Within th ree laps Jones had moved into th ird and th en pi cked off . both Gilland and Werschey on the nex t lap to take th e lead. Werschey h eld seco n d as Steve Wool ed ge moved past Gilland on th e final lap to grab third. J ones was un stoppable as h e rou ted ahea d of the pack to start mo to two. Chris Grasso chased J ones thro ugh out th e five-la p mot o with both Gilland a nd Wooledge mo vin g pa st R ick Boep pl e by midr ace to hold the top five finis hes. J ones had more than 20 seco nds o n Grasso by th e end of th e moto. J on es di dn't waste any time as he hol eshot mo to one of the 125cc B Class. Kevin Sweeney a nd Wool edge chased J on es to turn one but were left behind as Jones jumped to a quick lead . Sweeney and Wooledge held second and third with Grasso movi ng into fourt h by midmo to. The batt le i n moto two w a s between Ch ris Bodo and Sween ey. By th e second tu m , J ones was on his way to ano ther victory. Bodo held second wit h Sweeney a nd Grasso chasing. Bodo kept his H onda in second wit h Sweeney camping on hi s back tire th ro ughou t th e race. Wi th J ones o u t to a co m manding 24- ' second lead, Sween ey grabbed an inside line and turned th e throttle to pass Bodo for second with less th an a half lap to th e checkered £lag. Greg Wheeler powered hi s H onda to th e overall victory in the combi ned 125/250cc A class. Wheeler had to settle for second in moto o ne as Mike Boggi a wo n the race, grabbing th e lead off th e line and remaining ou t fro n t for the en tire eigh t-lap moto. Wh eeler held a solid second as the .ri ders behind jockeyed for third. Steve Gardiner lost third to Pete Maurice only to regain hi s position two laps later when 'Maurice seized. Gardiner lost third for the final time when Joe Maurer caugh t and passed him, th en moved to within three seconds of Wh eeler by moto's end. Wheeler took the . start-to-fin ish win in moto two. Ron Dunfee chased Wheeler with Gardiner and Maurer hot on his trail. Gardiner dropped out as Maurer fell back to fifth while Barney Barnett motored ahead of Dunfee. By Jenny Bayles O KLAHOMA CITY, OK, J ULY 10 T he hot a nd humid weather didn't bot her Kaw asaki 's Dennis Haw- ' tho rn e and J eH Em ig as they too k hom e overa ll wi ns in th e 125 an d 250cc Expert cla sses at th e Int erstate Speedway for the 2nd Annual Nei l Reid Co nst ruction-sponsored Oaki e Shoot-O u t. The 250cc first moto actio n saw Em ig take the lead early in the race foll ow ed by H on da-mounted Steve Bayles and Suzu ki rider Clay H oenshell. By th e third lap Hawthorne had worked hi s way into the second posi tio n from h is fourth -place start. Bayles ha d some problems and went down hard in a corne r allowing H oen shell to mot or past and in to th ird posi tio n. Bu t Honda 's Jason U psha w was on the gas and managed to ge t past H oenshell , sna tch in g third place. Em ig gree ted the checkered flag, immediatel y foll owed by H awthorne with Ups haw fini shing . third. The second moto was packed with hea ted racing action as Upshaw came up with the hol eshot but was soo n passed for the lead by Em ig , follow ed by Honda's Brett Shumate in third. As the battle cont in ued, a motivat ed H awthorne worked his way from th e middle of the pack into a competit ive thi rd positi on. U psha w tightened th e ga p but Emig took the checkered flag and the overall victory , with Upshaw settling for a close second and Hawthorne a hard earned third. T he 125cc Expert class started off wi th Upshaw in the lead and H oenshell and Emig battling for second. Hoens he ll maintained his seco nd position a nd was within stri king distan ce of th e lead er wh en he was forced to pu ll off th e track because of mec han ica l di fficulties. H awthorne managed to pass Em ig and the two fou ght to the fin ish with U pshaw going on to a flawl ess victory foll owed closely by Hawthorne and Em ig. T he seco nd m oto wen t H awtho rn e's way as he sto le the hol eshot, stretched h is lead and went on to win the overa ll victory, with Ups haw in a distant second followed by Emi g. Ward whips Happy Valley MX By Dale Bohm . - SP RINGVIL LE, UT, J ULY 2 Yamaha 's La rry Ward won the 125cc A class and .was one of th e top qua lifiers a t th e West Central Regional Qual ifier held at Happ y Valley MX Park. T he course featured ma ny supercross-type obsta cles th at are sim ilar to those at the fin al s a t Loretta Lynn 's, but severe dust made the co nditio ns trea cherous. In the first moto Plaza Cycle's Brad Frampton blasted into 'the lead but was soon overcome by Ward. _Walker Cycle's Lance Walker held down third place .over Nielson and Mik e Deuel. Walk er went down in th e dust, which allowed Nielson into third. Frampton tried hi s best to reel in Ward, but Ward held his ground. T he f in i sh i n ~ order 'was Wa rd , Fr ampton , NIel son, Walker and Deuel. Fram pt on came back in th e 250cc A class to win over Ward when the Yam aha rider went down while leading th e second m oto, In the first mot o Frampton bl ast ed into the lead and proceeded to hold off Ward for three laps. Once past Frampton, Ward proceeded to pull away and 'win with a comfortable lead. Kawasaki rider La rry Jackson worked his way up to third after a dismal start, Monarch Honda's Corky Maughan and Alan Donaldson rounded out th e to p five. Frampton hol eshot th e second moto, but Ward was quickly by and immediately pulled ou t a lead over Framp ton , J enkins, J ackso.n and Walker. Ward we n t down hard midway through the rnot o, allowing Framp ton into th e lead. Ward worked hi s way back up to second by th e wh ite flag, but Frampton was long gone with th e moto win and overa ll victory . Ricks dominates L.ake Whitney Motocross By Joyce ladd WHITNEY, TX, J ULY 9-10 Kawasaki- sponsored J ack Ricks III cap tured three out of four Intermedi ate class wins, pI us the 125 and 250cc Open cla ss wins during ' the 11th Annual Good Time National at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch . Ri cks- star ted the two-day event by win ni ng th e 125 and 250cc Open classes on Saturday. When the gate dropped for the start of moto one in th e I25cc Open class it was Ri cks out front with the holeshot, Yamahas p o nso re d ' Chad P ed erson a n d H onda-mounted Tim Hodes were ridi ng hard for a close second and third. On th e fifth lap Hodes was abl e to pass Pederson to take over second while Ri cks powered to a decisive win. Pederson was on the gas and almost passed Hodes at the fini sh line turn but overshot the corner. Mot o two saw Ricks out front again, but this time Pederson took over th e lead to take the checkered flag first. First overa ll went to Ricks with his 1-2score, second to Pederson and third to Gra yson Goodman. In th e 250cc Open class Ri cks had a perfect I-I score.
