Suehlbags COCR Motocross By Susan Willian SU GA R GROVE, OH , J U L Y 17 J eromy Buehl went 1-1 in the Schoolboy class for overall honors at the fou rth and fi nal race of the Bu dweiser 'Seri es at the Central O h io 's Compe tition R iders MX _ Buehl led start-to-finish in moto one despite effo rts by Ri ch ard Carpenter to catch h im. Ca rpen ter took seco nd overall with a 2-2 score. T he L ightweigh t P ro class was more challenging for Bu ehl as h e had h is work cu t out for him against Chuck Reed. Bu ehl a nd Reed duked it ou t in mo to o ne, bu t Bu ehl hun g on to first at th e checkered with Reed close beh ind a nd Brent Blevins third, Moto two fo und Bueh l again in the fro nt p o si tion whil e R eed 'p la yed chase. Th e du o zo omed around the wel1- prepped co u rse unti l Buehl slid down in th e back section putting Reed in co m m a nd. Reed strettch ed h is lead out over Bueh l for th e win an d the overall with a 2-1 whil e Bu ehl settled for second with a 1-2. Blevins was a no sh ow in m oto two. Blevins took charge in the first round of ac tion in th e H ea vyweigh t Pro foll owed by Bryan Moose a n d Reed . Moose swung too wide, a llowing Reed to ta ke over seco nd, Reed dosed th e gap o n Blevins to ride o n h is rea r fender. Reed and Blevins collided, putting th eir b ikes in a tangl e. Moose took advantage o f the situation and moved by th e mishap, taking over firs t wh ere h e remained at th e checkered. Reed fired from th e line in m oto two with Moose seco nd and Blevins third. By lap two, Blevins was a no show after ta kin g a hard cras h in th e w hoop secti on. Reed held a com fortabl e lead as he cruised to the finish, followed by Moose. Len n y Sauer charged ahead of th e pack in the first m ot o of th e Senior Mini class as he wa s pursued by Joshua Steel, Joe Woodfork a nd Rob b ie St urgell. Woodfork dropped to fif th as J ason Williams moved into fourth, and Steel moved by Sauer to take th e lead. Steel held to firs t a t th e checkered followed by Sauer. Sturgell a nd Will iams battled for third as Williams tried everyw he re to get by Stu rgell . Williams erred in a tum to take the heat o ff Sturgell , who grab bed third. Steel was quick o ff the ga te in mo to two , foll owed by Sturgell a n d Sauer. Sauer pressured Sturg ell keeping him o n h is toes th e en tire moto as Steel rode for first with some distance over seco nd-p lace fin ish er Sturgell, and Sauer in third . Return in g to motocross after a la yoff , Scott Bobst aced both motos of the Open B class for th e overall while Greg Ra n d won four rno tos, taking ov eralls in th e 65cc a n d . Junior Mini. Riders from a ll parts of Alaska, The Yukon T erritory and Northwest Territories co nverged for three days of co m petition in Whitehorse. Whitley whips 'em at Wolfcreek MX By Joyce Ladd RIO VISTA, TX, J U L Y 2-3 Bill y Whitley dominated th e First Annua l Firecrack er Nati onal at Wolfcreek MX Park, taking wins in the I25cc and 250cc Expert classes. .T ra ck owner T ed Edwards offered a $100 . bountv in both classes to th e rider w ho could bea t the Cagivasponsored Whitley. Several tri ed but no one co u ld get around Whitley. In th e 125cc Expert class, Whitley wa s pushed hard by J eff Ba iley. Bu t wh en the cheche red flag came o u t it wa s Whi tley first. In th e 250cc Expert class, Whitley was fo llowed around th e tra ck by T odd Schberger a nd Chuck Tresidder. When the checkered flag came out, Wh itley powered h is Cagiva across th e fini sh lin e first. Moto o ne of th e 125cc Open class saw Brad Moran bag the hol esh o t, with J.J. Slagle seco nd, Brent Peterso n th ird an d Joey Bloxom fourth. Slagle p us hed Moran hard a nd passed in a sweeper to take over th e lead o n lap two. The first fo ur riders th en kept th eir positions for the rest of th e m oto, Peterson took th e lead in mo to two followed by Bloxom a n d R.C. Ben n ett. By la p two, Bennett took over th e lead an d lap th ree saw Slagl e move up to ta ke position three. At the finis h it was Bennet t, Peterson a nd Slagle. First overall went to Slagle, second went to Peterso n and th ird to Bennett. In the 80 Novice class, Str ipling Smith shot out front in th e firs t moto fo ll o wed b y Brad Wo ol sey a nd Lanny Cox II . By lap two , Smith was p u lling away and go t a co mfo rtab le lead , wh ich he h eld for the rest of the m oto. At th e checkered flag it was Sm ith first, Cox second and Wool sey th ird. When the ga te dropped for moto two, Smith was out in front agai n with th e h oleshot, Smith kept th e gas on a nd lap ped the last place ri der before th e moto en ded. Taking th e checkered flag firs t wa s Smith , seco n d was Che R otr h m b le and third was Doug Boyd. Smith took th e overall win with a perfect I- I sco re. Mot o o ne of the Over 40 class sa w Hazin Smi th take the h o les h ot followed by Ole Jay Finstad first, Smi th seco nd an d H agin s third. Don Lewis su rvived th e many crashes on the track to finish seco n d while Nicky Sterl in g took th ird. Mike Da n iels rode hard to stay out front for th e di stance in O pen B ra cing , though Mik e Gurl ey and Robert Craig stay ed righ t on his rear. AndrewBreitenbach and J oe Bastin did battle in th e 250cc class Da sh for Ca sh. With two laps to go , Bastin ca p tu red th e lead an d wouldn 't let go as he a nd Breitenbach h eaded for the flag.
